The Druids, who were an order of priests in ancient Gaul and Britain, took part in the autumn festival of Samhain. They celebrated the food that had been grown during the summer and the tradition of decorating with pumpkins, leaves and cornstalks originates from their gatherings.

The imagery we use-witches, ghosts, black cats-originates with the Druids as well. They believed that the ghosts, spirits, faeries, witches and elves came out on Halloween to harm people. They also thought that cats had once been human beings, but were changed as punishment for their evil deeds.
