Legacy Report
Descendants of Josef (Joseph) ZBYTOVSKY
First Generation
1. Josef (Joseph) ZBYTOVSKY was born in 1800 in Moravia, Czech and died in 1845 at age 45.
General Notes: Information: A "z" at the beginning of a slavic name has the sense of the "of" or "from" as in the cas of "von, van, de, di" in other languages. The suffix "sky" adds "belonging to" just like the suffix for Londoner or Brooklynite. So in other words. for the surname Zbytovsky, it may have originally been Bytov or possibly Zbytov (with the 'z and the sky meaning from or of, just a theory). Also noted: 15 miles south of Jimramov there is a tiny place called Zbytov.
Josef married Eleanora Frantisek SAFR(0VA), daughter of Frantiska SAFR and ?. Eleanora was born in 1802.
Marriage Notes: Reference Number:1638
General Notes: I have also seen her name spelled Gaffer(ova), Saffr(0va), Gaffr(ova) To pronounce her last name: The S in Safr in this case is pronounced "sh" and the "a" is near to the "u" in suffer.

Mary Katherine Zbytovsky, 97, died on Friday, Jan. 26, 2007 at Lakeside Medial Center in Pine City. She was born on May 11, 1909, the eldest of 10 children born to Anton and Annie (Hlavek) Spinler in Mission Creek Township, Pine County. She married Emil Zbytovsky on June 27, 1928 at Zion Lutheran Church in Pine City. They raised six children on their Beroun dairy farm. Mary was well suited to farm life. She enjoyed the outdoors and Bohemian style cooking. She always had a large garden, selling produce in the early years and giving it away in her later years. Her flower gardens included many heirloom plants shared by friends and family. A visit to her in the summer always included a tour of her gardens and in the winter a showing of her houseplants and the latest quilt she was sewing. She did her best to make sure all her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren had at least one (or several) of her handmade quilts. From some conversations with mother: Grandpa Arnold owned a model T Ford. They never owned a washing machine; all laundry was done by hand. The had a wood stove for cooking and an "icebox" for refrigeration, the ice was delivered. The home which was rented, and was heated with an oil burner. One time, there was a tornado and great grandpa Borka (Lizzie's dad) hid behind the bed, while he was supposed to be baby sitting.
Grandpa Arnold was a house painter and wall paperer and Grandma Lizzie stayed home. Mom was the first one to own a radio, but grandma and grandpa used to listen to it all the time; the favorite programs at the time were "Cecil and Sally" and "Ma Perkins". They never owned a record player, but Lizzie's sister Theresa had a boyfriend who'd bring over his crank-type one. Grandpa played the violin, his violin was given to my brother Robert Betlach. The kids rarely went to the movies, because they didn't have much money; even though admission was only 10 cents. Mom liked Joan Crawford movies. During WWI the family got commodities. Mom owned a white poodle when she was about 10, she got him from the landlord, Mr. Wally Johnson. The favorite games around the house were "Little Red Riding Hood" and some game where they would spin 10 and take 10 steps, Checkers and the parish priest, Father Stelmus would come to the house and play checkers with Sylvester. Mom's favorite toy was her doll, she wrote 1927 on the back of the doll and a stroller, I still have the doll. The kids didn't have many toys and for Christmas they each got a bag of candy. They didn't celebrate December 24/5 with gifts, but Celebrated Jan 6th, St. Nicholas Day. Grandma Anna (Zbytovsky) Zeman would have the kids over to her house.
They attended St. Joseph's Catholic Church and if for some reason grandma wasn't home on a Sunday, grandpa would see to it they always got to mass. Grandpa was not of the Catholic faith, he belonged to the Moravian Church. The kids could go on dates with chaperones. Birthday's were not made into some big celebration, probably for lack of money; there were no gifts exchanged. Grandma sewed all the clothes or remade hand-me-downs. The didn't live on a farm but grandma always raised a garden.
During the war Arnold worked in a shipyard in Pendelton, Oregon. I have a letter from Arnold to Lizzie from Oregon, where he writes of breaking his arm or shoulder and tried to draw a picture of where his arm broke.

Newspaper article "A GROOM LESS WEDDING", 22 Jul 1910, (kept in Borka book) Newspaper article about Elizabeth, who was supposed to marry a Mr. Fritz but he left her standing at the altar. Two years later, she married Arnold. My mom, Madeline, never knew that grandma was previously engaged and had planned to marry Mr. Fritz. She also told me that grandma wasn't grandpa's first choice, that he was really in love with her sister, Agnes but Agnes wanted nothing to do with him, so he may have married grandma on the rebound. She said they didn't get along that well as she was growing up. Grandma lived 56 years in the house in Waconia by the lake. All the children were born there. They first lived downstairs then she spent the rest of her time there living upstairs. I remember when there was no indoor plumbing and when we visited grandma, we used what my dad called "thunder mugs" at night so we wouldn't have to make the trip to the outhouse, especially in the cold. She moved out of Waconia sometime after 1970 and moved in with my mom and dad, Madeline and Louie. When grandma moved from Waconia, she gave me the sleigh bed that all of the kids were born in. Some years later my mother gave me the tall, mirrored dresser that matches the set. There is one other dresser to the set which I think is in the Kaufhold family. I still have the bed and dresser. The original furniture store tag is still on the back of the dresser with grandpa's name on it.
Grandma cleaned house for Dr. & Mrs. Margaret Arnold. Margaret and my mom went to school together. Grandma also worked in the canning factory.
Rudy tells me that Grandma chewed "snuff" her entire life (no one ever knew). I guess she started as a young girl when she worked with all the men in the fields. Her favorite "brand" was Red Devil. Rudy said that one time he was taking mom to do errands and mom asked him to stop at the drugstore, asking why, mom told him she needed to get grandma her chew! That's the first Rudy ever knew grandma chewed. I never knew either until Rudy told me sometime later. I always thought she was chewing gum. No wonder she always kept a tissue in her hand!!

I remember Dorothy living about a half a block from our house in Anoka. It was in the huge white house that sat on top of the hill overlooking the old high school football field on 4th Avenue. I believe she did upholstery work. I used to see her walking down the street to and from her home carrying her big cloth bag. She was a sweet woman. She would sometimes stop and visit my mom.

General Notes: Copy of Baptism Certificate, St. Josephs Waconia, Mn. Copy of Marriage Certificate, St. Josephs Waconia, Mn. SS#: 475-03-9770 Small article June 6, 1932, Waconia Patriot, concerning graduating from St. Joseph's School
My mother finished the 8th grade and walked the 5 blocks to school. She attended catholic school; some of her teachers were Sister Veronis and Sister Pauletta, Sister Pauletta did not like, her brother Sylvester very much. June 3, 1932, Waconia Patriot, concerning a play St. Joseph's School put on.
Mom was the first one to own a radio, but grandma and grandpa used to listen to it all the time; the favorite programs at the time were "Cecil and Sally" and "Ma Perkins". Mom owned a white poodle when she was about 10, she got him from the landlord, Mr. Wally Johnson. The favorite games around the house were "Little Red Riding Hood" and some game where they would spin 10 and take 10 steps, Checkers. Mom's favorite toy was her doll (which I still own) and a stroller. Mom's best friend was Margaret (Kolb) Arnold; and when they would walk to school mom would put her arm around Margaret's waist and they would walk that way and one day Margaret said "You know I just got this coat, and you're putting a hole in it!" Mom cleaned house and babysat for a Mrs. Mock and earned 25 cents a day. One time she broke a goblet and Mrs. Mock was very upset, mom offered to work it off to pay for it. Mom didn't work after her marriage while the boys were little. But did work at Oswalds Cafe on Ferry Street at some point. She remembers the Depression but always remembers having enough food. My dad was a guard at the Twin Cities Arsenal during the war.
In the 1950's mom worked at Nielsen's Grocery Store in the meat department with my dad. In the 1960's, she started working at NFC Company, which was the Nels F. Cornelius Company; which eventually became West Bend Thermo Serv. She worked there just under 20 years. After retirement and after my dad passed away, she sold the big house at 311 Monroe and moved with my grandmother to a mobile home in Ramsey, Mn. In 1999 she came to live with me, until I had no choice, because of her health issues, but to place her in a Monticello Nursing Home where she remained until her death in 2002.

The church is now called Church of the Good Shepherd Copy of Marriage Certificate St. Josephs Church Waconia, Mn Copy of application for the Social Security Card. Louis was a butcher like his father and also owned a meat market in Anoka, Minnesota called Betlach's Meats, it was located inside Jepson's Market on the corner of Main and Ferry Streets.
My Dad:
Oh Lord, how I miss him. It's difficult to write just one thing about my dad, he encompassed so much of my life. He was protective, sometimes overly protective of me. Maybe because I was the only girl, maybe because I was the baby of the family, the last child he was to have. Of course, growing up I thought he was being old fashioned, a fuddy duddy (like he would say) when he wouldn't let me do things when I was of "dating" age.
I remember going to the grocery store "Nielson's" down by the Rum River after school. Dad and mom both worked there when I was in grade school and I'd have to go there and wait for them to get off work. Then dad could no longer be a meat cutter (butcher) because he lost his big toe to gangrene and couldn't stand for long hours after that, so he became a school bus driver and during summer vacation he sometimes would take me on a charter with him if it was something he thought I'd like.
Fishing????? Look up the definition and you'll either find dad's picture there or my mom's. How those two could fish!
Rudy says when dad first came to Anoka (or there about) he would run moonshine for the man who owned the dry cleaners where he worked. (Dave Hymanson).]]
Occupations: Anoka Cleaners------and ran a little moonshine!!! Early-mid 1930's Federal Cartridge, until 1948 Minneapolis Arsenal, Guard during the war Butcher- He and Uncles Joe and George all helped grandpa in his meat market "Betlach's Cash Market" located on 3rd & Main Street in Anoka, across from the Skelly Gas Station and S & L Department Store. Then grandpa had surgery in the mid 1940's and sometime after retired from the business. Dad then opened a meat market in Jepson's Grocery Store in 1948, on the corner of Main Street And Ferry Avenue In Anoka. Billy Graham used to come to Anoka and visit the Baptist church across the street from the meat market and he stopped in to the meat market/grocery store one day and my brother Robert met him, he patted Robert on the head and said he was a fine boy! Then in the early 1950's about 1952/53 dad went to work at Nielsen's Grocery Store by the Rum River in Anoka. He worked in the meat department for Frank Vicha. Mom worked there as well, as a meat wrapper. I remember going to the grocery store after school. I'd have to go there and wait for them to get off work, because they wouldn't let me go home and stay alone. The store used to have a small coffee/donut counter and that is where I read the newspaper that Marilyn Monroe had been found dead in her home. There was a hardware store in the basement section of the grocery store. I used to go down there a lot and stare at all the toys that were for sale. Dad had very poor circulation in his legs, no doubt from years of smoking. He stood long hours cutting meat and that coupled with the smoking took it's toll. His feet would get so cold he couldn't feel them; one evening after work he came home and his feet were cold like ice. We had an old oil burning stove in the kitchen and he'd take his shoes and socks off and sit by the heater to try and warm them. One particular evening he was warming his feet and leaned over to reach something off the kitchen counter and unknowingly his big toe was touching the stove, he burned it quite badly and because of his poor circulation developed gangrene; he ended up having the toe amputated and suffered a great deal because the wound would never close. Going to his favorite Café for breakfast on day, an acquaintence notice dad hobbling on his foot and asked him what happened. During the course of the conversation the man advised him to quit smoking or the wound would never heal. It must have been worth it for dad to try because shortly after he quit smoking, the wound did start to close. He could no longer stand long hours cutting meat so he had to look for a new job. My brother Robert was at the time driving school bus for Kottke's Bus in Anoka. Dad took over his route and drove school bus, Bus #30 to be exact, for the Coon Rapids Minnesota School District until his retirement. The kids absolutely loved him to death.
Residences our family lived in Anoka, Mn (some before I was born): 2308 Wingfield Avenue 633 Cross Street--Owned by Edward Mills 1920 3rd Avenue South, A duplex (this is the first house I remember) 311 Monroe Stree--my grandfather's house. Grandpa bought this house on a sealed bit at an auction for around $2500.00
In 1961 my dad/mom were going to buy a home north of Anoka by the Fairgrounds. I remember my dad and I went to grandpa's house to tell him of their plan to purchase the home. Grandpa got very sad and after we left he came over and begged dad and mom to move into his big house so he wouldn't have to live there all alone. We moved in and mom and dad did extensive remodeling to the house. The original barn is still on the property. The home was originally owned by a doctor and my dad used to find glass medicine bottles in the dirt when he would dig up the ground to plant flowers and such. There were also some in the barn. The barn had two stalls for the doctor's horses. When we moved in the upstairs part of the barn was my play house. It had the sliding door that the doctor used to store the hay in for the horses, there were holes in the floor upstairs so the hay could be dropped down to the stalls. My dad once dug up a cow skull in the back yard; the odd part of this is the house sits one block off Main Street in Anoka. It sure must have looked different in the town back then. After my father died, mom continued to live in the house with my grandma and my dad's sister, Helen. Helen died in 1985 and the house became too much for my mother and grandmother to manage. The house was sold but a stipulation was put on the sale by my brother Rudolph, that was: the barn was never to be torn down as long as the house stood.

Obituary, Anoka County Union Posted: 12/30/04
'One of those officers bigger than life' dies by L.A. Jones, Union editor
Lifelong Anoka resident Rudy Betlach, former Anoka High School football, baseball and track star and sergeant for the Anoka Police Department, "was a local cop in the good sense of the word," said Anoka Police Chief Ed Wilberg.
"He took the time to get know the residents," according to Wilberg about Betlach, 65, who the Anoka police chief remembers looking up to in his boyhood when Betlach was an athletic icon at the high school.
Betlach, who also served in the United States Navy from 1957 to 1960 on the USS Boxer, died Dec. 23.
When Wilberg started with the Anoka PD in 1975, Betlach was an investigator and taught a lot of the young recruits, including himself, according to Wilberg.
"He was one of those officers who was bigger than life," Wilberg said, having recorded numerous track records at Anoka HS. "He always took great pride in helping other police officers."
The one distinct thing Wilberg recalls most about Betlach was that he always had a tale to tell, and his tales were dramatic, heartfelt and affected the way people felt about things.
"His stories all had a point to them," Wilberg said. "He was the kind of a man with stories that showed good always overcame evil."
If there was a kid from a good family, according to the chief, Betlach would take him or her under his badge in a disciplinarian type of way because he knew he would receive better punishment from his family than any kind of punitive measures the juvenile justice system could possibly dole out.
Because Betlach lived all of his life in Anoka, he knew many of the families in the community and made it a point to make friends and acquaintances with everyone he met.
When he retired from the Anoka PD, Betlach had risen to master sergeant in charge of coordinating the patrol division. Betlach was also a member of the Anoka American Legion.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Sherrill L.; children Christine (Thomas) Vinje, Anthony Betlach, Elizabeth (Robert) Timm, Rachel (Matthew) Leshovsky, Theresa Betlach, Jessica (Peter) DuCharme; special daughter, Shari Frocier; sister Patricia A. Russell; brother Robert (Frances) Betlach; 13 grandchildren; one great granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian Burial occurred Dec. 28 at St. Stephen's Catholic Church. Private interment was at Calvary Cemetery, Arrangements were by Gearhart Anoka Funeral Home.
Eulogy "KEEPING IT REAL WITH RUDY B." Eulogy for Rudolph C. Betlach, December 28th, 2004 Who is Rudy Betlach? He is a son, a brother, a husband, a father, a grandfather, and most recently, a great grandfather who was born , raised and lived his entire life in Anoka. He is a natural born athlete who excelled in high school athletics and was voted most handsome of his senior class. ( A fact that we were reminded of again and again throughout our lives.) He also played basketball in the Navy for which he served three years. He married our mom, Sherrill, in 1960 and they just celebrated their 44th wedding anniversary on December 10th. He became a father in 1961 (for the FIRST time) and became a police officer for the Anoka Police Department in 1965, a career that spanned 24 years until his retirement as Sargent in 1989. Our Dad was a proud man in many ways. He was proud of his family. He loved to watch us "shaking it loose" on the dance floor and just got a kick out of watching his children interact. He was proud of his Naval and Police careers. He had a den that displayed pictures, trophies, badges and other mementoes. When he was able, his lawn was meticulously manicured. Bikes were not allowed on the grass let alone the birds he would chase away so they wouldn't leave footprints on the lawn. He was extremely proud of his name. We felt sorry for every telemarketer that mispronounced it. He was proud of his "things". He had many collections he proudly displayed such as beer signs, classic car models, and, most recently, ships. The big things such as boats and cars were even named and labeled. Mom and Dad extended their home and hearts to a special person we consider a sister. Shari recalls the night Dad brought her to our home when she was 15 and assured her she was safe. She considered him her hero. Shari became a part of our family and lived with us for the rest of her childhood. Dad wore the pants in the family....at least that's what Mom let him think. Mom and Dad weathered many storms but, 44 years, 6 kids plus Shari, 13 grandchildren and one great grandchild later they remained strong and Dad let everyone know how Mom was his entire world. Dad had many interests. There was a time in his life he would hunt pheasants with his dogs Sassy and Big Red, but his main recreational love was fishing in the summer and the winter. He made his own fish houses and even let his children help. He was a diehard fisherman at that. Rain or shine he would always go fishing. The same rule apparently, applied to golf. Our brother, Tony, recalls an afternoon of golfing during a downpour. It was raining so hard they couldn't see 50 feet in front of them but they were still swinging at balls. It wasn't all bad though, they had the whole course to themselves! Dad loved to work in his garage. He would be in that garage from morning until night refurbishing an old boat (either to keep or sell) or refinishing the woodwork on a piece of furniture. His garage was his haven, he would even paint the floor. The garage also became party central equipped with its own refrigerator and bar where many celebrations were held that are still talked about today. Dad also loved music. Our Aunt Patty recalls memories of him playing the guitar and singing to her. In later years he did the same for his children. He would even choreograph hand gestures for us to act out some of his favorite songs by Conway Twitty and the Four Lads. Perhaps some of you were lucky enough to attend functions where we were forced to perform. Dad also enjoyed coaching his daughters softball teams for a few years. Leo that he was, he lived his life like a lion. There was no sugar coating with Dad. He was always at the ready with his opinions whether you wanted them or not. He was who he was and didn't pretend to be anything different. You either loved him or he thought you loved him. Quite frankly, he didn't care either way but he did have a heart of gold and loved dogs and people and was particularly compassionate toward children. Many people would agree that he had charisma. He was also the king of one-liners, most of which cannot be repeated in the house of God. The one thing Dad enjoyed most in life was being with friends and family. Your visits to the house, your phone calls, your birthday and Christmas cards gave him so much joy and something to look forward to. This is exactly how Dad would have wanted this day to be. To see all of you here, recalling the memories you once shared with him. He would not want you to grieve for long. He would want you to talk about him, remember him always and to celebrate the times you had together. We would also like to hear all the great stories of our father that we know are out there, please feel free to share them with us. In closing, our Dad played many roles in life and he did it his way. He was a legend in his own mind and his neighbors considered him a legend so he obviously had them convinced. To all of us who loved him, he is a legend in our own private way.
