A musical based on a play by French playwright Marivaux, TRIUMPH OF LOVE
premiered on Broadway in 1997 starring Betty Buckley, F. Murray Abraham as
well as UCLA Music Theater Alumna Susan Egan as Princess Leonide. With
music by Jeffery Stock and Lyrics by Susan Birkenhead, TRIUMPH OF LOVE is
a period piece with big dresses and big hair, plus clown-like characters
from the commedia dell'arte. The story follows a Princess who cheats
and lies, dons disguises, and even cross dresses as a man to be near the
one she loves. The witty book has held stage since the 17th century
and the music is post Sondheim Broadway. High style, high notes and
high comedy combine with a clever adaptation of the French play by James
Magruder. TRIUMPH OF LOVE is directed by John Hall, with musical
direction by Gary Busby.
