Elephunk
Black Eyed Peas
A&M / Interscope / Universal
Ranking 4.5/5

The addition of female Fergie to Black Eyed Peas has finally given this hip-hop crew the chemistry needed to make a truly impressive album. Elephunk is a diverse mix of hip-hop, funk, lo-fi rock, and creativity making it a true breath of fresh air.

Black Eyed Peas are best known for their live band performances, and this experience plays strong in the album's hard-hitting starting lineup. The horn and guitar-laced head-nodder 'Hands Up' starts off the album. This is followed by the radio friendly feel-good, 'Labor Day (It's a Holiday),' which makes me reminisce about Naughty By Nature's 'Holiday' hit. The guitar on 'Let's Get Retarded' captured my attention, and then the fun chorus climaxed my experience.

'The Boogie That Be' is the album's gem. Its deep bass mixed with handclap and electro-funk will have you grooving like it was still the seventies. 'Shut Up' is another favorite as both the beat and chorus are captivating, while emcees will.i.am and taboo shine. 'Anxiety' is a guitar-heavy rock song befitting of chart-topping status. 'The APL Song' and Fergie's vocals on the liberating 'Fly Away' had me seeing visions of the Fugees.

The only downfall of Elephunk is Black Eyed Peas' desire to generate too much diversity. The reggae vibe on 'Hey Mama' and the Latin vibe on 'Latin Girls' fails to provide the punch accomplished by the rest of the album and seem out of place. Ironically, the first single 'Where is the Love' is one of my least favorites as its mainstream pop sound makes me gag.

In my eyes, Elephunk is one Black Eyed Peas' best albums. It presents a risky diversity which I adore. Despite three unappealing songs, it provides ten other funky, musically satisfying songs that more than make up for its few sore spots. Elephunk pushes the boundaries of hip-hop and will be embraced by those seeking something new and creative.
