The rough, rugged and raw Francophone quintet of Onze, 2Faces, T-MO, B.I.C, and Canox are back and better than ever. Known together as the group 83, they've managed to release their second album, La Suite Logique, less than a year after their first. This comes as no surprise given the success of their debut album, hiphop 101, which has sold more than 10,000 copies. In fact, the single, 'Bounce avec le 83,' reached #1 on the Musique Plus' Top 20 countdown in April of 2002.
La Suite Logique is a mix of hard, yet conscious lyrics á la Onyx; impressive scratching by DJ Blast; and down-to-earth east coast beats similar to those of Classified (underground Halifax producer/emcee). The majority of the production is handled by 2FACES providing a real authentic underground feel, reminiscent of the old days.
My favorite track, 'Québec Gold,' is just that - the album's golden egg. The beat for 'Straight Like Dat' sounds eerily similar to Swollen Member's 'Lady Venom,' but the scratches and vocals are distinctly different and just as catchy. Other impressive songs include 'J'fais ce que j'peux,' '100% Hip Hop,' 'La vraie vie,' and 'Toujours le même genre.'
83 has the hip-hop scene in Québec locked down. If their live show is anywhere near as solid as this album, then they're set. Watch for La Suite Logique to solidify their position as a potent French hip-hop group.
