CAMP-IN 2002
                                                                     December 6/7

On Friday, December 6 twenty six members of Troop 287 converted the Social Hall at Chapel Hill into a model campsite complete with 30 tents, gateway, axe yard, cooking stations, knot tying demonstration, First Aid station, Leave No Trace station, packing demonstration, summer camp videos and campfire. By 7:00 the site was ready for 27 second year Webelos Scouts to experience an evening of camping fun.

After the Webelos were settled in their tents, SPL Brad C lead the troop in opening ceremonies and introductions. Scouts spent the evening showing their skills to the Webelos at the various stations.

Traditional cracker barrel included cheese, sausage and crackers, tortilla chips with Tom C's home made salsa and punch. When the food was gone, everyone gathered around the campfire for skits performed by the Scouts. Songs, reflections and Vespers completed the campfire. The "sun" started to set at 11:20 and was completely down by 11:45 when Ryan O sounded taps.

Weather conditions were ideal at the campsite. No snow, no frost, no cold. A comfortable 70 degrees. Saturday morning the "sun" rose promptly at 7:00 with reveille by Ryan O.

Webelos were introduced to the troop mainstay of Ziploc omelets, donut holes, milk and juice for breakfast. Everyone had a chance to build their own omelet!

Part of the camping experience is learning the proper way to set up and take down camp. Under the watchful eyes of troop members, our Webelos guests practiced the fine art of taking down, folding, rolling and stuffing camp tents.

With the campsite dismantled our next task was a Service Project for CHUM. We cleaned the floor of the Social Hall and set the up the dining area for 100 guests that were coming for lunch. Webelos and Scouts worked side by side setting up tables and chairs, spreading table linen, placing centerpieces and decorations for the group.

Our work was done so efficiently that we had plenty of time for extra games and to get better acquainted.

Closing flag ceremony and the traditional Troop 287 Circle-up our second Webelos Camp-in was complete. We need to start thinking about how to make this event even better next year when we invite second year Webelos Scouts to experience our Camp-in.
