May Campout - Owassippe Iron Chef cooking was the theme Owasippe was the location - result was good food and fun The spring setting was on the banks of Lake Wolverine at Owasippe Scout Reservation. Owned by the Chicago Council of Boy Scouts of America, this 5,000-acre camp north of Muskegon has been in operation since 1911. Scouting started in the US in 1910. Coordinated by SPL Cam H, Scouts chose Iron Chef as the cooking theme for the weekend. Meals prepared had to include potatoes and cheese. They made several very creative dishes from potato pancakes to home made chocolate cheesecake baked in a dutch oven. Instructed by Venture Scouts on fire building, fire safety, proper knife and axe use and safety, new Scouts earned their Totin’ Chips and Firem’n Chits while at the campout. We enjoyed our traditional troop night hike on Saturday evening following the main road at camp to a clearing for stargazing. Some Scouts tried their skills at fishing in Lake Wolverine and had the rare opportunity to watch a swan land on the lake. It was like watching a Boeing 747 land at Metro Airport. They both require a LONG runway! While we were there, the Red Wings continued to win games leading up to the Stanley Cup! Several new parents joined twenty-three Scouts and nine leaders for the first time for this camping experience. Return to Outing Page |
