Scouts have a very successful week at Camp Frontier Twenty-eight Scouts and seven leaders attended Summer Camp July 14 - 20 at Camp Frontier. Weather was perfect for summer camp - dry, sunny and hot. Our Scouts kept very busy working on advancements and merit badges. We have 9 new Tenderfoot Scouts and several more very close. Sixty-eight merit badges were completed during the week and another 13 with only a few requirements left to do. Once again this year we cooked food at our campsite. With the cooking skills our Scouts have been working on and help from some leaders, we ate very well! Led by SPL Brad C and ASPL Sam C one goal of the troop was to earn the Baden-Powell Award at camp. There were 14 very specific tasks the troop had to accomplish during the week and everyone worked hard to accomplish the goal. This is the first time Troop 287 has earned the award. Our plaque is on display at Chapel Hill. Older Scouts Brad C, Tom C, and Dustin B tested their lashing skills by building a two-story tower among the trees at the campsite. The structure lasted all week! Wednesday evening, family night, we were pleasantly surprised with more than 25 family members visiting the camp and having spaghetti dinner with the troop. We had to do some last minute scrambling to prepare additional food for the families. It was a special treat for SPL Brad C because his Grandparents visiting from Australia were able to see the camp. Congratulations to Mr. McQuitty, Daniel B, Ryan C, Mac H and Dwight T for earning their Polar Bear Swim award at camp. Every morning they were up by 6:00 to go swimming! Thanks to all the leaders who spent time at Summer Camp with our Scouts. Jim Chodl (also helped coordinate the cooking), Joel Clark, Don McQuitty, Dave Slade, Chris Karpinski, Doug and Lorri Harris. Because of their time spent our Scouts had a successful and fun Summer Camp. Next year we will be returning to Camp Frontier for Summer Camp the week of July 20-26. Return to Outing Page |
