Troop 45 Family Camping Weekend - 9/20-21/03
TO RETURN TO INDEX
On the weekend of September 20 & 21, Mineola’s Boy Scout Troop 45 held their annual Family Camping Weekend at Moriches Coast Guard Station.  While most of the Troop camping activities are for Scouts, this event, which kicks off the Scouting Year for Troop 45, is specifically planned for the entire Troop Family.  Scouts, parents and siblings all look forward to this weekend of sun and fun and great family activities.
As the Coast Guard Station is set right on the shore of Moriches Inlet, water sports always play a major part of the weekend’s activities.  There were Jet Skis to try with Assistant Scoutmaster Willie Schweiger, or perhaps a turn at the helm of the Sail Boat with Mr. G (Scoutmaster Steve Grosskopf), or you could join the group on the dock casting a line hoping for the big fish that would supplement dinner!  There was something for everyone including Bocce Ball and Soccer, exploring the Coast Guard Station or just sitting around and talking with Troop Family members.
Saturday night ended with a huge Troop Feast planned and executed by the Scouts.  Hot Dogs, Sausage and Peppers, Garbage Can Turkeys, and Dutch Oven Pineapple Upside Down Cake cooked in dutch ovens over hot coals were on the menu and the Scouts did an excellent job impressing family members with the skills they’d learned in Scouting.  Saturday ended with a great Troop Campfire with songs, skits and lots of good times!
Sunday was scheduled to start at 8AM, but most of the Scouts were up before 7AM baiting their hooks and once again trying their hand a fishing.  Sunday’s breakfast was provided by “da menz” (Assistant Scoutmasters Drew Martone and Dan Sapanara) and once again the Troop Family ate well.  After camp was broken down, the Troop was taken on a tour of the Coast Guard Station by our hosts and then it was time for one last activity – Rocket Shooting!  Under the watchful eye of Senior Patrol Leader Will Schweiger, multiple Scouts took their turn at running the countdown and pressing the button.   Most Scouts seemed to enjoy chasing the rockets once they descended to earth as much as watching them go up, and all agreed that it was a great way to end the weekend!
This was a great weekend for fun and fellowship.  A great way for members of the Troop Family to get to know each other and to strengthen the “Family Bonds” that keeps Troop 45 great!!
