Justin and the Flying Clouds Prep for Sea Base!

Sea Base Crews 2 & 3 went to the Allatoona Aquatics Base on May 21-23, 1999, to prepare for their Sea Base adventure in August.

We had 11 Scouts (Justin, Ted F., Matt F., Phil, Brent, Kyle, Ross, Scott, Peter, Michael Sa. and Adam), along with Messrs. Fischgrund, Munro, Owens, Strange and Hale.

Everyone passed the morning swim test before heading out for a great day of sailing. Our crews were on three boats -- Das Boot (18'), Starwind (20') and Flying Cloud (24'). Troop 115 went out on the Commodore (26').

After learning some basic sailing skills we spent the day tacking and racing. We had incredible winds during an afternoon thunderstorm which worked us really hard. Several times the wind pushed the boats horizontal to the water. At day's end there were a bunch of crusty old salts ready to do the on land training where we showed off the things we had learned during the day.

The winds were great on Saturday, but weren't so cooperative on Sunday. The lack of wind forced us to put our new skills to the test. All of the captains on our boats were great instructors and were very patient with their less than competent crews.

Many of the Scouts called this the "most awesome" weekend trip our troop has ever done.

Many kudos to Ted F. and his dad for putting together this wonderful trip. Ted did a great job as grubmaster. Meals were well-planned, tasty, and bountiful. They also required very little fuss and muss leaving more time for fun. Thanks Ted!

Which Scout can write the best Sea Base song sung to the tune of Gilligan's Island?
See below for an idea to get you started.

Theme Song Lyrics

Opening Credits

Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale, a tale of a fateful trip
That started from this tropic port, aboard this tiny Ship.

The mate was a mighty sailin' man, the Skipper brave and sure,
Five passengers set sail that day for a three hour tour. A three hour tour.

The weather started getting rough, the tiny ship was tossed.
If not for the courage of the fearless crew, the Minnow would be lost.
The Minnow would be lost.

The ship set ground on the shore of this uncharted desert isle
With Gilligan, the Skipper too, the Millionaire and his wife,
A movie star, and the rest (the Professor and Mary Ann), are here on Gilligan's Isle.

Closing Credits

So this is the tale of our castways, they're here for a long, long time,
they'll have to make the best of things, it's an uphill climb.

The first mate and his Skipper too, will do their very best,
to make the others comfortable, in their tropic island nest.

No phone, no light, no motor cars, not a single luxury,
like Robinson C-rusoe, it's primitive as can be.

So join us here each week my friends, you're sure to get a smile,
from seven stranded castaways, here on "Gilligan's Isle."

Troop 764 Sea Base Version:

Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale, about our Sea Base trip.
We started from this tropic key, aboard our worthy ship.

The sun would shine, our skin was red, lobsters were we all,
Out in that big wide ocean our captain was the law.
Our captain was the law.

etc., etc., etc.

Please give your ideas to Mr. Owens

The Winds of Fate

One ship drives east and another drives west
With the selfsame winds that blow,
'Tis the set of the sails
And not the gales
Which tells us the way to go.

Like the winds of the sea are the ways of fate,
As we voyage along through life;
'Tis the set of the soul
That decides its goal,
And not the calm or the strife.

-- Ella Wheeler Wilcox, American Poet
