Tahirih's Dance (Classical Persian)
Tahirih was a great poet, teacher, and spiritual leader in mid-1800s Persia (now Iran). She
was a leader of the Babi movement which broke away from Islam and later became
the Baha'i Faith. She is most remembered for being the first woman to remove her
face veil in public and for founding the women's movement. She was martyred at age 36. This
dance shows scenes from her life and symbolizes her breaking out of the restrictions her culture
had placed upon all women. Both photos here are of Sherifa.

Tunisian
Couscous Dance
Vigorous front-and-back hip twists while standing on
the balls of the feet typifies Tunisian dance. The couscous dance has many
sudden starts and stops. The costume dates back at
least to the days of the Roman Empire when Carthage,
in present-day Tunisia, was Rome's greatest
rival.
