Church History
The Troy Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church was founded in the year 1855. The original church was called, “the Piney Grove Episcopal Church.” The land was given by a white family named Troy around the turn of the century. This possibly explains how the church earned its name. The parking lot marks the spot where the first wooden building was erected. Around the turn of the century the church’s name became Troy Chapel Methodist Church. The congregation later changed the name to the Troy Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church.
The church’s recorded history dates back to 1923. Rev. George Green was the Pastor at the time. Other ministers who served through the mid 1940's were Rev. Eddie Edge, Rev. Curtis Edge, Jr., Rev. Seay, Rev. Issac Chappell, Rev. Bob Jackson, and Rev. Allen. From the mid 1940's to 1953, the Rev. C. H. Milledge pastored the church. The man who led troy chapel into the 20th century is Rev. J.J. Cottrell. His reign began in 1953. It was under his spiritual leadership in 1955 the Board of Trustees and members decided to build a new church which still stands today.
Earlier members of the Trustee Board included: H. D. Dillahay, Charlie Snow, and Abrham Williams. Others who served under Pastor Cottrell were Harrison Dillahay, Ranson Webster, Nelson Evans, Paul Dillahay, Lorenza Williams, Rufus Williams, Will Henry Worthy and Henry Flowers, Senior. These men served in many capacities. Many knew them as the early 20th century fathers of our church. Years later their sons became trustees and leaders in the church. They were Joseph Williams, Caesar Jones, (who was later called into the ministry), John Williams, Isaiah Flowers, Sr., David Rouse, John Flowers, and Aaron Robinson. They’re responsible for the fellowship hall being added to the church.
Although the men of our church have served well, history will not let us forget some of the faithful working ladies . Early outstanding ladies were Nellie Dillahay (who served as a Mother of the church), Jenny Golsby (Stewardess), Fannie Mosley, Jenny Samuel, Janie Snow, Ann Blackshear, Sis. Katie Pickett, Fannie Jackson, Ada Williams, Lucille Greenwood, Sara Harris, Ellen Williams, Patsy Gholsby and Willie Mae Snow. These ladies and others dedicated their services to God and Troy Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church. The daughters of these warriors, included faithful servant Savannah Robinson, Rossetta Robinson, Mary Worthy, Jennie Rouse, Rosie Jones, Mattie Bedgood, Edna Flowers, Arlene Flowers, Ella Riley, Elizabeth Gholston, and Ester Samuel.
Rev. Cottrell pastored Troy Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church for 28 years. Some of the most recent ministers to pastor Troy Chapel were: Rev. Larry D Robinson, Rev. Ernest Sanders, Rev. Holley, Rev. J.J. Fountain, Rev. Leonard Cammack, Rev. Vernell G. Lewis, Rev. Willie Wright, Junior, and the present pastor Rev. Dr. Fred rogers. Under the leaderdship of Rev. Lewis the congregation renovated the sanctuary by redoing the ceiling and adding new lighting fixtures in the sanctuary. They also installed central air and heat in the Fellowship Hall. The Board of trustees were Calvert Ponder, Chairman, Gwendolyn Elmore, Secretary, Edward Bedgood, Treasurer, Ernestine Chappell, David Milledge, William Milledge, and Jacqueline Samuel.
God blessed this church body under the leadership of Rev. Lewis with a Male Chorus in January 1994. Darron Tymes, Senior served as president. The chorus made its debut the first Sunday in March 1994. The church also purchased one acre of land to the front of the church. Under the leadership of Rev. Wright, the church formed its current mass choir. Under the guidance of Rev. Dr. Fred Rogers the church added a female choir(the FGR singers), paved its parking lot, renovated the fellowship hall, recarpeted and painted the sanctuary. More renovations are planned for the future.
The church motto is “for we walk by faith and not by sight” which comes from II Corinthians 5:7. |
