The figure posed with my two handmaiden customs.

It takes a long time for an action figure to develop from the initial concept, through the design stages, to prototype testing, to final manufacturing, and finally into the hands of the consumer. If the product release date is set to correspond with the release of a film, then toy manufactures may have to begin designing the figure without adequate information about the character being reproduced. Thus, figures such as the infamous 1978 Blue Snaggletooth (or the original Podrace announcer figure), that bear little or no resemblance to characters appearing in the Star Wars films, are sometimes the result of this process.

I suspect lack of time and inadequate reference materials were also responsible for the Naboo Royal Security figure, whose uniform was a completely different color from those that appear inThe Phantom Menace. Despite my limited painting skills, I figured I could do better.

This is a close-up of the head.
This figure was a real pain to repaint, given the number of surfaces that interact with each other; the legs had to be painted and repainted several times over to finally achieve an even finish with no blemishes, and the brown on the armour still isn't a perfectly consistent color.
Compares my custom to the Hasbro version.

Never satisfied with a simple repaint, I also swapped heads with a Captain Piett figure, and the original Naboo Royal Security head ended up on my Imperial Commander custom. The Piett face actually looks a lot more like the actor pictured on the Episode I card (see attached carded version).
