From Antigua I visited Volcan Pacaya (2552m), my third live volcano climb at the time.

Going with a busload of peeps, we leisurely climbed the backside of the volcano to the crater. The sulphuric fumes emitted from the crater made for an immense cloud of poison, so thick it was impossible to see beyond a few feet of the yellow-caked crater rim. The thinnest breakaway mists had us gasping for oxygen. Had the wind quickly shifted direction even for sixty to ninety seconds, catching us off guard, I am sure many of us at the peak would have been killed (and tourists do die from unexpected eruptions / explosions).

A remarkable experience; risky yes, but I find climbing live volcanos one of the most primal activities of all terrestrial adventures.
