Carretera Austral Sceneries Background: The Carretera Austral (Southern Highway) runs 1240 kilometers from Puerto Montt to Villa O'Higgins through the rural and isolated sections of southern Chile. From Puerto Montt I caught a bus to Quellon (Isla Grande de Chiloe), a ferry to Chaiten, bus to Puyuhuapi (picture 1: Queulat Hanging Glacier), bus to Coihaique (largest city with 50000 inhabitants), to Cochrane around gorgeous Lake General Carrera (pictures 2-5), ferried across Fiordo Mitchell (picture 6), to final destination of Villa O'Higgins (picture 8) at the end of the road.
