Cerro Fitz Roy

Named after Robert Fitz Roy, captain of the ship Beagle (Charles Darwin's famous voyage 1831-36), mountain Fitz Roy is the highest spire (3375m) in a compact range of granite peaks.

Dreamed about by climbers its sheer faces present long stretches of arduous technical climbing. The weather in the area can change quickly, making climbing attempts exceptionally treacherous.

Not for my walk in the park, however. Blue, cloudless skies and not a trace of wind made for a fabulous day hike. As an extra I scrambled to the top of cerro Madsen (1806m), a 700 meter rise from the normal trekking viewing area, to get a better look at the peaks.
