A MESSAGE By Florence Ciang :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Ladies and gentlemen, On behalf of Melbourne Chin Christian Fellowship, I would like to say words of thanks firstly to God and to the Federal Government of Australia and to the New Hope Foundation for their kindness towards us and for our being here this morning. When we first entered this beautiful and peaceful land of Australia, we were extremely heavy burdened with our fears and worries, our myseries and wounded hearts which were broken into pieces but now we had been healed physically, mentally, emotionally. By our Australian government through many sources such as Centrelink, AMES,DIMA,the New Hope Foundation and Christian churches such as the Westgate Baptist Church and the likes as well as different organizations have been taking care of us in a very special way.. Could you please bear with me if I share a small portion of our being as Chins and Christians in our mother country of Burma? I was ever informed that the UNO has recognized the Chin people as “People with no voice” Our Burmese history had many outstanding records about the Chin people for their honesty, faithfulness, patriotism towards the stability of our nation Burma. Some of those are as follows. (1) When the British Empire annexed Chinhills which was the last one to be invaded by the Chief Commander in chief, Field Marshall Sir George White put a remark saying” Encounter with the Chins most difficult enemy to see or hit I ever fought” As a result the medical sergeant was granted the highest medal for gallantry “ Victoria Cross “ for risking his life fighting against the Chins. (2)Even though Burma gained her Independence in 1948 , she almost lost her state power for fighting against multi coloured enemies , the Chin soldiers risked their lives for saving Burma which came into existence today in exchange for streams of blood on the altar of the Union of Burma. As a result , the U Nu government granted the “Aungsan Thuriyah “ medal which was the highest level of honour to the Chin Officer “Chai Chuan” This honour was ever granted only to 5 persons in the history of Burma. (3)Concerning to gain Independence from the British government, General Aung San was demanded that the major tribes of Burma should come to the point of agreement for unity so that they should be able to form up the Union of Burma. As a result Burma gained her Independence in 1948. The flag of the Union of Burma showed that the 5 major tribes namely the Kachins, the Karens, the Chins, the Shans and the Burmese should have equal right s with each other regardless of the population each tribe should have. (4) General Aung San had formed up his Cabinet with national leaders from each tribe but unfortunately Aung San and his cabinet members except the Chin leader by the name of Dr. Vum Ko Hau, a retired Ambassador who is still alive were assassinated by the murderers on 19July 1947 just before Burma gained her Independence. Do we really have equal rights among each other? General Ne Win seized the state power in 1962 and turned Burma into a Socialist country which was called the Socialist Republic of the Union of Burma which is consisted of 7 States and 7 Divisions with its new constitution. The flag of Burma is showing at present when the Burmese people have 7 shares, each of the tribes namely the Kachins, the Karens, the Chins and the Shans should have 1/14 of the benefit of the country.of the Union of Burma. Ethnic cleansing and persecution of the Christians As stated above, the tribal people have no more portion in the nation of Burma and to make the situation worse, the military government took the sovereign power from the Socialist government in 1988. Ethnic cleansing and persecution of the Christians took place openly in the country of Burma in such a way that Christian ministers are imprisoned any time they want to, churches and missions and Bible schools are closed down any time, some Christians villages were forced to convert into Buddhism by the military order, crosses were burned down into ashes and replaced with Buddhist temples , Christians should never be promoted to a higher level of position unless they change their religion and Christians should no more become officers in the future is the saddest thing of all. Learning lesson from the past Let me come to my conclusion by sharing you a true story of our Chin National Hero who passed away 3 weeks ago in Washington DC, USA. The whole Chins all over the world shocked to hear about his obituary through the media such as BBC, Free Asia Radio. Washington post put a remarkable statement for him as “Dr. Vumson Suantak (1937-2005) , Philosopher, Mentor, Humanitarian, Personal Hero for Thousands” Dr. Suantak left a word for his family to make his cramation in USA and the ashes to be buried in his small village of his birth place in Chinhills. After he gained his Ph.D in Natural Science in Germany he came back to Burma to serve his country his very best. He was sent to the Mawchi mine where all kinds of insergeants were around and he was paid K300 for his monthly salary which is equavalent to 37c of Australian currency recently. Over 30 years he had been struggling to have unity among the Chin people not only in Burma but also in India, Bengladesh, Manipur, Mizoram and all over the world by spending his own money with genuine love, humbleness, concern, compassion until he took his last breath. He really has given us the best example for the Chins in Australia as well as the Chins All over the world. I wish all the Chins in the world would follow his footstep and his example to be their guidance .Let me ask each and every one of you in this room a question. Does he deserve 37c for his monthly salary? Ladies and gentlemen, Once again may I say thank you to all of you for the opportunity I am privileged this morning to be here. Thank you very much. Sincerely, Florence Ciang Melbourne Chin Christian Fellowship :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: |
