Around the turn of the century the remnants of several tribal groups of the Ngaiawang Nation gathered at Swan Reach, many worked for white people others attempted to live in a more traditional manner. In 1926 a mission station was set up on the western bank of the river opposite the town. Mrs Matthews was the first to take charge of the settlement which soon conducted religious instruction. A Church was one of the first structures erected.
