 Ephesians Chapter 3

By: Rich Puckett

As with most of my studies, my comments are in red. The blue is from Matthew Henrys and Believers Study Bible commentary.

Ephesians 3: (v. 1-7) The apostle sets forth his office, and his qualifications for it, and his call to it.

(v. 8-12) Also the noble purposes answered by it.

(v. 13-19) He prays for the Ephesians.

(v. 20,21) And adds a thanksgiving.

The apostle sets forth his office, and his qualifications for it, and his call to it

(Eph 3:1 KJV) For this cause I Paul, the prisoner of Jesus Christ for you Gentiles,

Paul was a willing prisoner for the Lord, he learned that that the seed of God was so planted with in him that he could not escape the calling even if had chosen too. This is true to any of us that truly become born again, and taste of the Spirit of God, we may not want to admit it but no matter what in our hearts the mark, the seed is always there.

Phile 1:9 Yet for love's sake I rather beseech thee, being such an one as Paul the aged, and now also a prisoner of Jesus Christ.

Heb 6:4 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost,

Heb 6:5 And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,

Heb 6:6 If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.

Heb 6:7 For the earth which drinketh in the rain that cometh oft upon it, and bringeth forth herbs meet for them by whom it is dressed, receiveth blessing from God:

Heb 6:8 But that which beareth thorns and briers is rejected, and is nigh unto cursing; whose end is to be burned.

Eph 3:1: Verses 1-7. For having preached the doctrine of truth, the apostle was a prisoner, but a prisoner of Jesus Christ; the object of special protection and care, while thus suffering for him. All the gracious offers of the gospel, and the joyful tidings it contains, come from the rich grace of God; it is the great means by which the Spirit works grace in the souls of men. The mystery, is that secret, hidden purpose of salvation through Christ. This was not so fully and clearly shown in the ages before Christ, as unto the prophets of the New Testament. This was the great truth made known to the apostle, that God would call the Gentiles to salvation by faith in Christ. An effectual working of Divine power attends the gifts of Divine grace. As God appointed Paul to the office, so he qualified him for it.

(Eph 3:2 KJV) If ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to you-ward:

"Dispensation" is a translation of oikonomia (Gk.), a term combining the words "house" and "law." The basic meaning then is "household law." The word is used in the N.T. to describe an epoch in which God emphasizes a particular aspect of His purpose for the human family. Here consideration is provided for the dispensation of God's grace, the epoch in which we now live. Note 1:10, in which the same word is obviously used of a future era.

(Eph 3:3 KJV) How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words,

The more you study the more you pray the more God reveals unto you. Paul spent most of his life in study of the Law of God, then met Jesus and his heart changed and he now knew the law of God. Many men study and know the words of this great book, but not so many have them written on the heart.

2 Ki 23:3 And the king stood by a pillar, and made a covenant before the LORD, to walk after the LORD, and to keep his commandments and his testimonies and his statutes with all their heart and all their soul, to perform the words of this covenant that were written in this book. And all the people stood to the covenant.

Mark 7:6 He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.

Exo 24:12 And the LORD said unto Moses, Come up to me into the mount, and be there: and I will give thee tables of stone, and a law, and commandments which I have written; that thou mayest teach them.

2 Cor 3:3 Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshly tables of the heart.

1 Sam 10:9 And it was so, that when he had turned his back to go from Samuel, God gave him another heart: and all those signs came to pass that day.

1 Sam 16:7 But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.

Isa 29:13 Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men:

Isa 38:3 And said, Remember now, O LORD, I beseech thee, how I have walked before thee in truth and with a perfect heart, and have done that which is good in thy sight. And Hezekiah wept sore.

Isa 51:7 Hearken unto me, ye that know righteousness, the people in whose heart is my law; fear ye not the reproach of men, neither be ye afraid of their revilings.

Isa 51:8 For the moth shall eat them up like a garment, and the worm shall eat them like wool: but my righteousness shall be for ever, and my salvation from generation to generation.

Isa 57:15 For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.

A mystery, in N.T. terminology, refers to a truth long hidden but eventually revealed to man by God at the appointed time. Most of the 27 occurrences of the word in the N.T. refer to some aspect of the plan of salvation: e.g., the kingdom of God (Matt. 13:11, note; Mark 4:11; Luke 8:10), the hardening of Israel and the admission of the Gentiles (Rom. 11:25), the equality of Gentiles with Jews (3:3-6), the gospel (6:19; 1 Cor. 2:7; 4:1; Col. 4:3) and its reception (1:9; Rom. 16:25; Col. 1:26, 27), the sweep of God's redemption (1:9; 3:9), the resurrection (1 Cor. 15:51), the central doctrines of the faith (1 Tim. 3:9, 16), and Christ Himself (Col. 2:2). The term is also used of marriage as a symbol of Christ and the church (5:32), of prophetic secrets (1 Cor. 13:2; 14:2), of the "man of sin" (2 Thess. 2:3), and of intended symbols (Rev. 1:20; 10:7; 17:5, 7).

(Eph 3:4 KJV) Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ)

2 Chr 34:30 And the king went up into the house of the LORD, and all the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and the priests, and the Levites, and all the people, great and small: and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant that was found in the house of the LORD.

Neh 8:3 And he read therein before the street that was before the water gate from the morning until midday, before the men and the women, and those that could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive unto the book of the law.

Neh 8:8 So they read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.

Jer 36:6 Therefore go thou, and read in the roll, which thou hast written from my mouth, the words of the LORD in the ears of the people in the LORD'S house upon the fasting day: and also thou shalt read them in the ears of all Judah that come out of their cities.

Jer 36:7 It may be they will present their supplication before the LORD, and will return every one from his evil way: for great is the anger and the fury that the LORD hath pronounced against this people.

2 Cor 3:2 Ye are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read of all men:

Paul's meaning of a mystery is the exact opposite of its use in the mystery religions, in which esoteric teachings were communicated to an elite few, who were enjoined never to divulge the secrets. Paul uses the term "mystery" ironically to herald the publication of the long-hidden secrets of God to the entire world. Chief among these is the fact that God is now welcoming Gentiles into His kingdom and affirming them as having equal standing before Him with Jewish believers in Christ.

(Eph 3:5 KJV) Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit;

1 Cor 1:21 For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.

(Eph 3:6 KJV) That the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel:

(Eph 3:7 KJV) Whereof I was made a minister, according to the gift of the grace of God given unto me by the effectual working of his power.

1 Chr 16:22 Saying, Touch not mine anointed, and do my prophets no harm.

Psa 105:15 Saying, Touch not mine anointed, and do my prophets no harm.

Also the noble purposes answered by it

(Eph 3:8 KJV) Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ;

Mat 19:30 But many that are first shall be last; and the last shall be first.

Mark 9:35 And he sat down, and called the twelve, and saith unto them, If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all.

Eph 3:8: Verses 8-12. Those whom God advances to honourable employments, he makes low in their own eyes; and where God gives grace to be humble, there he gives all other needful grace. How highly he speaks of Jesus Christ; the unsearchable riches of Christ! Though many are not enriched with these riches; yet how great a favour to have them preached among us, and to have an offer of them! And if we are not enriched with them it is our own fault. The first creation, when God made all things out of nothing, and the new creation, whereby sinners are made new creatures by converting grace, are of God by Jesus Christ. His riches are as unsearchable and as sure as ever, yet while angels adore the wisdom of God in the redemption of his church, the ignorance of self-wise and carnal men deems the whole to be foolishness.

(Eph 3:9 KJV) And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:

(Eph 3:10 KJV) To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God,

(Eph 3:11 KJV) According to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord:

(Eph 3:12 KJV) In whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him.

Gods plan for forgiveness of sin was not known by those of old, even those who told of it to come didn't really understand the event of which they spoke of. Today we talk about the last time and events that will happen, truth is we do not fully understand all the things told unto us but our eyes are opened more and more each day as God reveals more of the events. A new born again Christian cannot understand the word and all the things he or she should do but grow in them as you and I grow. If your not growing your dying so beware.

He prays for the Ephesians

(Eph 3:13 KJV) Wherefore I desire that ye faint not at my tribulations for you, which is your glory.

If you serve God you will suffer, why? Because you do not think like the world, your goals and desires are different then those who do not know God. Where you seek to good they want to hurt and destroy, where you will show love and forgiveness they will show hate and bitterness.

Acts 5:41 And they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name.

Acts 5:42 And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ.

Rom 8:17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

1 Cor 4:12 And labour, working with our own hands: being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we suffer it:

1 Cor 4:13 Being defamed, we entreat: we are made as the filth of the world, and are the offscouring of all things unto this day.

1 Cor 12:26 And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it.

2 Cor 1:6 And whether we be afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effectual in the enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer: or whether we be comforted, it is for your consolation and salvation.

2 Cor 1:7 And our hope of you is stedfast, knowing, that as ye are partakers of the sufferings, so shall ye be also of the consolation.

Phil 1:29 For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake;

Phil 1:30 Having the same conflict which ye saw in me, and now hear to be in me.

1 Tim 4:10 For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe.

2 Tim 2:12 If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us:

2 Tim 2:13 If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.

2 Tim 3:12 Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.

1 Pet 2:20 For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God.

1 Pet 2:21 For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:

1 Pet 3:14 But and if ye suffer for righteousness' sake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled;

1 Pet 3:15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:

1 Pet 3:17 For it is better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing, than for evil doing.

1 Pet 4:15 But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men's matters.

1 Pet 4:16 Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf.

1 Pet 4:19 Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator.

Eph 3:13: Verses 13-19. The apostle seems to be more anxious lest the believers should be discouraged and faint upon his tribulations, than for what he himself had to bear. He asks for spiritual blessings, which are the best blessings. Strength from the Spirit of God in the inner man; strength in the soul; the strength of faith, to serve God, and to do our duty. If the law of Christ is written in our hearts, and the love of Christ is shed abroad there, then Christ dwells there. Where his Spirit dwells, there he dwells. We should desire that good affections may be fixed in us. And how desirable to have a fixed sense of the love of God in Christ to our souls! How powerfully the apostle speaks of the love of Christ! The breadth shows its extent to all nations and ranks; the length, that it continues from everlasting to everlasting; the depth, its saving those who are sunk into the depths of sin and misery; the height, its raising them up to heavenly happiness and glory. Those who receive grace for grace from Christ's fulness, may be said to be filled with the fulness of God. Should not this satisfy man? Must he needs fill himself with a thousand trifles, fancying thereby to complete his happiness?

(Eph 3:14 KJV) For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

(vv. 14-21) The revelation of this great mystery by which God has joined Jew and Gentile is an occasion for a prayer of worship and adoration to God. In a sense, at this point Paul summarizes the major themes he has addressed in chs. 1-3.

(Eph 3:15 KJV) Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named,

How can you hate those that are different in color or because they understand some parts of Gods word different then you do? We are all of one family and should be showing love and understanding, teaching and praying for our fellow members.

The sense here is that the entire concept of "fatherhood" or "family" stems from God's fatherhood, in contrast to the popular psychological fallacy that man created God as a "father image." He is also not our Father on the basis of His having created us; rather, "as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God" (John 1:12). This is in contrast to another popular theological fallacy, the "universal fatherhood of God and the brotherhood of man," in which a personal relationship with Jesus Christ by grace through faith is considered irrelevant to claiming God as Father (cf. John 8:44; 14:6; 1 John 5:11, 12).

(Eph 3:16 KJV) That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;

Deu 11:8 Therefore shall ye keep all the commandments which I command you this day, that ye may be strong, and go in and possess the land, whither ye go to possess it;

Deu 31:6 Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.

1 Chr 28:10 Take heed now; for the LORD hath chosen thee to build an house for the sanctuary: be strong, and do it.

(Eph 3:17 KJV) That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,

(Eph 3:18 KJV) May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height;

(Eph 3:19 KJV) And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.

You can never be filled until you have a heart and spirit of love. Study the book of first John where much time is spent on love.

And adds a thanksgiving

(Eph 3:20 KJV) Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,

Eph 3:20: Verses 20-21. It is proper always to end prayers with praises. Let us expect more, and ask for more, encouraged by what Christ has already done for our souls, being assured that the conversion of sinners, and the comfort of believers, will be to his glory, for ever and ever.

(Eph 3:21 KJV) Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.
