Titus Chapter 3

Titus 3: (v. 1-7) Obedience to magistrates, and becoming behaviour towards all, are enforced from what believers were before conversion, and what they are made, through Christ.

(Titus 3:1 KJV) Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work,
We must not use the freedom give us by Jesus to break the laws of our land. The only exception to this is if the laws would be contrary to the will of God in your life. For example if a law was passed saying you had to pray to an earthly leader. Or say a law was passed said you could not worship God. Yet today many take their brothers to court, sue the church, break many laws that have nothing to do with Gods will for man. In so doing you set a poor example and disobey the word of God which commands you to obey the laws of the land.
Rom 6:12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.
Rom 6:13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.

1 Cor 6:7 Now therefore there is utterly a fault among you, because ye go to law one with another. Why do ye not rather take wrong? why do ye not rather suffer yourselves to be defrauded?
1 Cor 6:8 Nay, ye do wrong, and defraud, and that your brethren.
(vv. 1,2) Note that Paul deals with three major spheres of Christian responsibility in Titus: (1) Christian leaders (1:5-16); (2) personal relationships (2:1-10); and (3) society and culture (3:1, 2).
Titus 3:1: Verses 1-7. Spiritual privileges do not make void or weaken, but confirm civil duties. Mere good words and good meanings are not enough without good works. They were not to be quarrelsome, but to show meekness on all occasions, not toward friends only, but to all men, though with wisdom, James 3:13. And let this text teach us how wrong it is for a Christian to be churlish to the worst, weakest, and most abject. The servants of sin have many masters, their lusts hurry them different ways; pride commands one thing, covetousness another. Thus they are hateful, deserving to be hated. It is the misery of sinners, that they hate one another; and it is the duty and happiness of saints to love one another. And we are delivered out of our miserable condition, only by the mercy and free grace of God, the merit and sufferings of Christ, and the working of his Spirit. God the Father is God our Saviour. He is the fountain from which the Holy Spirit flows, to teach, regenerate, and save his fallen creatures; and this blessing comes to mankind through Christ. The spring and rise of it, is the kindness and love of God to man. Love and grace have, through the Spirit, great power to change and turn the heart to God. Works must be in the saved, but are not among the causes of their salvation. A new principle of grace and holiness is wrought, which sways, and governs, and makes the man a new creature. Most pretend they would have heaven at last, yet they care not for holiness now; they would have the end without the beginning. Here is the outward sign and seal thereof in baptism, called therefore the washing of regeneration. The work is inward and spiritual; this is outwardly signified and sealed in this ordinance. Slight not this outward sign and seal; yet rest not in the outward washing, but look to the answer of a good conscience, without which the outward washing will avail nothing. The worker therein is the Spirit of God; it is the renewing of the Holy Ghost. Through him we mortify sin, perform duty, walk in God's ways; all the working of the Divine life in us, and the fruits of righteousness without, are through this blessed and holy Spirit. The Spirit and his saving gifts and graces, come through Christ, as a Saviour, whose undertaking and work are to bring to grace and glory. Justification, in the gospel sense, is the free forgiveness of a sinner; accepting him as righteous through the righteousness of Christ received by faith. God, in justifying a sinner in the way of the gospel, is gracious to him, yet just to himself and his law. As forgiveness is through a perfect righteousness, and satisfaction is made to justice by Christ, it cannot be merited by the sinner himself. Eternal life is set before us in the promise; the Spirit works faith in us, and hope of that life; faith and hope bring it near, and fill with joy in expectation of it.
(Titus 3:2 KJV) To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, showing all meekness unto all men.
To not talk about others in a evil way, not to be mixed up in fighting, but to be gentle and showing our ability to put others first is what we are taught to do. If you will ever grow in the Lord then you will learn to practice these things in your lives.
(Titus 3:3 KJV) For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another.
The vivid description of life outside of Christ focuses on the tragedy of being lost. The word "disobedient" is apeitheis (Gk.), literally meaning one who refuses to be persuaded. Men do not avoid Christ because of insufficient facts but because of proud and unrepentant hearts. The term "hateful" (stugetos, Gk.) is derived from the Styx River by which the gods took oaths, subject to the loss of their ambrosia and nectar. Consequently, the river, which is natively good, becomes hateful and despised, exactly as do even the best things in life for those who are lost.
(Titus 3:4 KJV) But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared,
(Titus 3:5 KJV) Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost.
We can not earn salvation, that price was paid by the death of Jesus. What we must do is accept his forgiveness then show the same love he showed unto us to others. Thus we bear the good fruit which is required of us if we are a good tree. Let me put it like this, you eat off a plate you get it dirty, you wash it, its now clean and ready to use, if you put again food in the plate its now dirty again. No not till you put germs are eat off the plate. We are the same way Christ by the power of the Holy Ghost cleans us up then if we put in our hearts the good food of his word we are useful. But if we put in the same old garbage of before then we are not clean any longer and will be lost.
Mat 23:25 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.
Mat 23:26 Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.
Luke 11:39 And the Lord said unto him, Now do ye Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and the platter; but your inward part is full of ravening and wickedness.
Luke 11:40 Ye fools, did not he that made that which is without make that which is within also?
2 Cor 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
(Mat 19:28 KJV) And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
Mat 19:28: The word "regeneration" (palingenesia, Gk.) is used in Titus 3:5 of personal regeneration or New Birth. The only other occurrence in the N.T. is this one, which promises cosmic regeneration. The idea, however, is certainly found elsewhere in the N.T. (Rom. 8:21, 22). The time of the regeneration mentioned here is evidently the millennial restoration period prior to the forming of the new heaven and new earth in the eternal state (cf. Rev. 20:1-6). The key to that identification is the position accorded to the disciples of "judging the twelve tribes of Israel." Therefore, the prophecy must be millennial. Verse 29 further declares a hundredfold reward, in addition to everlasting life, as the benefit given to the disciples.
(Rom 8:21 KJV) Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.
Rom 8:21: (vv. 21,22) When Adam fell, the entire "creation" suffered the results of sin (Gen. 3:17, 18). Primitive domesticity among the animals was lost, and decadence became apparent in every aspect of the universe. All of this creation of God groans and labors awaiting the day when it, too, shall be delivered from the bondage of its corruption into the liberty of the children of God. Ultimately, the efficacy of Christ's redemptive work at Golgotha extends even to the sin-cursed cosmos itself. This event transpires during the kingdom age or Millennium (Rev. 20:1-10). Jesus Himself spoke of the restitution of all things (Matt. 19:28). Old Testament glimpses of that marvelous era are found in Isa. 2:1-5; 11:1-9; Joel 3:17-21; Amos 9:11-15; Mic. 4:1-5, and elsewhere.
(Rom 8:22 KJV) For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.
The ineffectiveness of human works for attaining salvation is nowhere better seen than here. God's mercy saves us, employing the agencies of regeneration and renewal. "Regeneration" means "becoming again." Here the concept has to do with personal regeneration. At the moment a man exercises repentance toward God and faith in Jesus Christ, he is born anew (cf. John 3:3). The Holy Spirit makes him a new creation (cf. 2 Cor. 5:17). Matthew 19:28 speaks of cosmic regeneration, the renewal of the earth during the millennial reign of Christ.
(Titus 3:6 KJV) Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;
(Titus 3:7 KJV) That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
Mat 12:37 For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.

Rom 2:13 (For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified.
Rom 3:20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
Rom 3:24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:
Rom 3:25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;
Rom 3:26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.
Rom 3:28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.
Rom 3:29 Is he the God of the Jews only? is he not also of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also:
Rom 3:30 Seeing it is one God, which shall justify the circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith.
Rom 3:31 Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.
Rom 5:1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:
Rom 5:2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
Rom 5:3 And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience;
Rom 5:4 And patience, experience; and experience, hope:
Rom 5:5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.
Rom 5:9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.
1 Cor 4:4 For I know nothing by myself; yet am I not hereby justified: but he that judgeth me is the Lord.
1 Cor 4:5 Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts: and then shall every man have praise of God.
1 Cor 6:11 And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.
Gal 2:16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.
Gal 3:11 But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith.
Gal 3:24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
Gal 3:25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.
James 2:21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?
James 2:22 Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?
James 2:23 And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.
James 2:24 Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.
Good works to be done, and useless disputes avoided
(Titus 3:8 KJV) This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men.
Though often argued by some that want to justify sin that Paul taught only faith. This is twisting his word, he taught salvation, being the forgiveness of sin came only by faith, yet he taught once your sins were forgiven. Sins removed from your life that Godly works, the good fruits of the Spirit would be evident in you life. At no time does he make an argument that any amount of sin will make it to heaven in our lives, but spends more time on holiness and perfection (heart right with God) then other single writer. Many like to pull a verse or two out of the way its being taught to seemly make their ideal the right one. You must take the entire bible together to learn truth.
James 2:26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.
Titus 3:8: Verses 8-11. When the grace of God towards mankind has been declared, the necessity of good works is pressed. Those who believe in God, must make it their care to maintain good works, to seek opportunities for doing them, being influenced by love and gratitude. Trifling, foolish questions must be avoided, and subtle distinctions and vain inquiries; nor should people be eager after novelties, but love sound doctrine which tends most to edifying. Though we may now think some sins light and little, if the Lord awaken the conscience, we shall feel even the smallest sin heavy upon our souls.
(Titus 3:9 KJV) But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain.
This is a warning to us about those that would trick you and get you dug in to some contention over the law or even the Bible. Unless you are very rooted and strong in both the word and faith its far better to walk away.
You have no need to prove you faith in God. Yet is very important to be ready to testify of the hope with in you. This is much different from getting in to arguments of no avail.
1 Pet 3:15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:
1 Pet 3:16 Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ.
vv. 9-11) Paul admonishes Titus: (1) to avoid dissension (v. 9) and divisiveness (v. 10), and (2) to exercise discipline when necessary (vv. 10, 11). Paul's instruction here concerning discipline is consistent with other guidelines in the N.T. (cf. Matt. 18:15-20; 1 Cor. 5:1-13; 2 Cor. 13:1-3).
(Titus 3:10 KJV) A man that is an heretic after the first and second admonition reject;
heretick
—actually, "a man causing factions." Factions occurred when an individual did and taught what he chose, independent of the teaching and practice of the church. This was happening in Crete (3:9). after the first and second admonition reject—avoid. The believers should not engage in normal conversation with such people or try to correct them; rather, they should avoid them.(Titus 3:11 KJV) Knowing that he that is such is subverted, and sinneth, being condemned of himself.
Beware oh teacher and preacher and leaders that would twist Gods word for you own end. Not only do you mislead others but you two become lost.
Mat 5:19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
Mat 5:20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.
Mat 9:11 And when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto his disciples, Why eateth your Master with publicans and sinners?
Mat 9:12 But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick.

Mat 23:11 But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.
Mat 23:12 And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.
Mat 23:13 But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.
Mat 23:14 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.
Mat 23:15 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.
Mat 23:16 Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor!
Mat 23:17 Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold?
Mat 23:18 And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty.
Mat 23:19 Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift?
Mat 23:20 Whoso therefore shall swear by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon.
Mat 23:21 And whoso shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein.
Mat 23:22 And he that shall swear by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon.
Mat 23:23 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
Mat 23:24 Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.
Mat 23:25 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.
Mat 23:26 Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.
Mat 23:27 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness.
Mat 23:28 Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.
Mat 23:29 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous,
Mat 23:30 And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.
Mat 23:31 Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets.
Mat 23:32 Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.
Mat 23:33 Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?
Directions and exhortations
(Titus 3:12 KJV) When I shall send Artemas unto thee, or Tychicus, be diligent to come unto me to Nicopolis: for I have determined there to winter.
Titus 3:12: Verses 12-15. Christianity is not a fruitless profession; and its professors must be filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God. They must be doing good, as well as keeping away from evil. Let "ours" follow some honest labour and employment, to provide for themselves and their families. Christianity obliges all to seek some honest work and calling, and therein to abide with God. The apostle concludes with expressions of kind regard and fervent prayer. Grace be with you all; the love and favour of God, with the fruits and effects thereof, according to need; and the increase and feeling of them more and more in your souls. This is the apostle's wish and prayer, showing his affection to them, and desire for their good, and would be a means of obtaining for them, and bringing down on them, the thing requested. Grace is the chief thing to be wished and prayed for, with respect to ourselves or others; it is "all good."
(Titus 3:13 KJV) Bring Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their journey diligently, that nothing be wanting unto them.
(Titus 3:14 KJV) And let ours also learn to maintain good works for necessary uses, that they be not unfruitful.
(Titus 3:15 KJV) All that are with me salute thee. Greet them that love us in the faith. Grace be with you all. Amen.
