Artvin
At the Eastern tip
of the Black Sea, Artvin is a natural beauty with pine forests and mineral
springs. Dances reflect people'srelation with the wild nature, very
dynamic and smooth at times, accompanied by instruments as drums and accordions.
Artvin is atypical Black Sea region dance, performed by men and women together
or separately. The individual dances are as follows:
Sahlan: In Artvin, this word
means to rise or to grow, and symbolizes heroism. This is seen through
the dance steps. The dancers first gallop step on the heel, and then
hop forward and up, as a horse would rise charging for battle.
Döne: The dance shows
a young girl holding a mirror in her hand as she looks at herself in every
direction, and gets ready to impress all those who see her. |

Ata Bari, originally named Artvin
Bari, is accompanied with a song. In 1936, the Artvin folk dance
troupe was asked to perform for Kemal Ataturk. Ataturk enjoyed it
so much that he joined the dancers in the middle of thier performance.
Since then, the first stanza of the song and the name of the dance were
changed to honor him.
Hemsin Bari: Traditionally danced
at weddings and on hard wood floors. The movements are very quick
and ends very suddenly.
Mendo Bari was created by a
man named Mendo to show off during a wedding. It has the traditional
three-step kick movements, starting off very slowly and quickening suddenly. |
