Benny Chan Ho Man
I heard of him for the first time when he was going to replace Dicky Cheung in Journey to the West II. As always, I had some
prejudice towards the new comers and thought that he was going to be bad in portraying the monkey king. As a result, I decided not to rent JTTWII.
Anyway, I watched his other shows like Demi God Semi Devil , Anti-Crime Squad, Dragon Love etc. As you can see he always acted in ancient series.
I think Benny is such a lucky guy, too. I read from his forum that he was spotted by an agent while he was walking in the street and then became a star in TVB.
TVB also gave him big roles from his early days like the monkey king and Duan Yu. But his luck is limited there, I mean he can't make a real big success even though
he has so much potentials. I wonder why. As for me I never really liked him until I watched Reaching Out. It was the first time I saw him in such a funny role. (Well,
come to think of it...I think his Duan Yu in Demi God and Semi Devil was pretty funny, too) and I started to think that he's a pretty good actor and like him eventually. Now, I'm in the process of
watching JTTWII, I think he did a pretty good job there, too. It was hard to act in the same role that Dicky Cheung did since Dicky was perfect as the Monkey King, but Benny pulled it off pretty good.
Besides his TV career, I think he released a couple of EP or albums...I'm not sure...but I know that he does sing. His singing is pretty good, too. I heard Dragon Love themesong and JTTWII, they're
quite nice. But I guess he didn't get much recognition in his singing career yet. I've never seen his movies, I couldn't find them anywhere. So, I don't know if he's doing well or not.
My comment
I think he's a pretty good actor now. Maybe TVB should give him more chances to act as a real main lead. I mean he did Demi God and Semi Devil 1997
as a main lead, yet there was also Felix Wong. Again, in Reaching Out, there was Gordon Lam. Moreover I think if he can act in a more matured role
that would be good for him, too. I also want to see him more in modern series. Anyway, personally I want him to act in comedy series. Not only that I prefer comedy, but Benny's also great in comedy...so I think it's going to be
good for him.
His most memorable role: Lau Yee Sok, from Reaching Out
Strengthes: He looks cute and can act really good in funny roles. Looks great in ancient costume.
Weeknesses: His cute look and his sort-of baby face limited him to act in some roles (i.e. villain or a more matured role), need some improvement in
dramatic scenes. (He's pretty good but need a bit more improvement)
His TV series
- Demi God and Semi Devil [Recommened]
A very good adaption of Jin Yong's novel. This series got a very good production. Benny acted as Duan Yu, a prince in some country called Da Li (Not sure how to spell it) Duan Yu didn't like to practice martial arts since he's
the kind of guy who loves living in peace. Anyway, fate and luck made him involve in the busy world of martial arts...he practices some martial art to save people and to defend himself. Benny did a good job here.
Funny at times. He paired up with Carmen Lee in this show.
- Journey to the West II
He acted as a monkey king here. He did a fine job and looked pretty cute and funny. The show itself was all right but sometimes the special effects was kinda lame.
Benny's fans will love this show because Benny was way cute here. Anyway, if you want to compare it to part one it's not that bad, either...maybe not as good as part one but it was nice in its own way.
- Dark Tale II
He acted in two parts in Dark Tales II but I only watched one. I watched the one that he played a half-ghost, half-human (but he didn't know about that) because his mother (played by Louisa So) gave birth to
him when she died already. He lived with his father and he was a well-known artist in that town. He paired up with Joyce Chen in this series. It's an OK series, Benny's acting was nothing special in this one.
- Anti-Crime Squad
It was the first time I saw him a modern series and he acted as a cop. His character was just come back from Canada or America...I'm not sure because I watched it long ago. After he came back he became a cop.
I think he and Denise Ho made a cute couple and Benny looked really cute in this show. Anyway, the series itself was not so good...most of the cases were boring. (Some were good but...most of them were boring)
- Dragon Love
He and Fennie Yuen made a nice couple. Benny played Hei, a guy who fell in love with a dragon girl.(Fennie Yuen) Personally, I think it's just an OK
show. I think Benny's fans will like it because he was a real main lead in the show. But I think the storyline of this show could be better...
- Reaching Out [Highly Recommened]
My favourite series and Benny acted as my favourite character, Lau Yee Sok, a lazy kind of guy that turned hard working eventually. He was soooo good in this show, he was extremely funny and crazy.
I like his portrayal a lot. The show was great, too.
Every Benny's fans should watch this series. Definitely a MUST-SEE.
