Julian Cheung Chi Lam
I first saw him in 1994 when TVB announced that he was going to be the next Kwok Ching.
I kind of didn't like him at first because I thought he looked too smart for the part. Anyway, before
I watched The Legend of the Condor Heroes 1994, I rented The Remembrance.
This series changed my whole attitude about Chilam. I watched the first tape with the feeling that I didn't like him but this series really did grow on me.
And by the end of the show, I'm already his fan. After that I watched his next series immediately, The Legend of the Condor Heroes 1994.
I know that he was criticized a lot about his portraying of this role, but personally I think he did quite a good job here. I said this not because I'm his fan but I really think
he did fine. I don't remember much about Felix Wong's Kwok Ching because I was too young when I watched the 83's version. So, I can't really compare them.
And I don't want to compare them, either. I mean everyone got their own styles when they portrayed the role.
It's the matter of taste which one you like better. As for me, I like both of them. Anyway, LOCH94 wasn't a sucess in HK. Then he left TV circle for awhile
and continued to persue his singing career. He came back to TVB in 1996 with the big hit like Cold Blood Warm Heart which is
one of my most favorite series of all time. He did a great job as Lo Chi Kin. After this he became more popular and left TV circle again. He acted in more movies and
those movies were just doing OK, not a big success or anything. Then in 2000, he came back to TVB again with a BIG sucess like Return of the Cuckoo. This series was so popular and got very
high ratings in HK. And again, he became more popular. His singing career also got a better recognition. But then again he left TV circle and acted in more movies...
My comment
I feel that his career is like a life cycle...I mean he acted in a TVB series -- got more popular -- then acted in movies and released his albums --
then his popularity went down a bit/people didn't heard of him much -- then he acted in a TVB series again and got more popular...and this cycle goes on and on. I really wish that he has
more good luck, then his career will get a lot better because he's a very talented guy. He's a good actor and he can sing well, too. Anyway, personally I like watching him in TVB series the most and I think
it's a good way for him to get more fans.
His most memorable role: Lo Chi Kin, from Cold Blood Warm Heart
Strengthes: He's good looking...in a cute way. He can act and can sing well. He's got a good image as
a good/loyal boyfriend of Anita Yuen.
Weeknesses: His cute look limited him to act in some roles (i.e. villain), and I think he need more good luck.
His TV series
- Peak of Passions
I've never seen this series, so I can't tell what it's like. All I know is that he acted with his close friends, the pop band called the Grasshopper.
- The Remembrance[Recommened]
He acted as a gangster here. At first he was a killer and then became a big boss later. He paired up with Kenix Kwok
in this one. They made a real good couple. This series is very good. If you're Chilam's fan, you shouldn't miss this one.
- The Legend of the Condor Heroes 1994
Made from a classic novel of Jin Yong. He acted as a famous character, Kwok Ching and paired up with Athena Chu.
This series was all right but the production was not so good. It became real messy towards the end. Anyway, Chilam's acting was fine here.
Maybe he didn't look that stupid naturally, but here he did look very innocent and very naive.
- Cold Blood Warm Heart [Highly Recommened]
He was Lo Chi Kin, a character that was like a modern version of Kwok Ching. His acting in CBWH was incredible.
Chi Kin is a great character I would say and Chilam did a perfect job portraying this role. Plus, this series is highly entertaining
if you like those big-cast production of TVB.
- The Ching Emperor
He played the emperor, Hong Hei. I don't remember much about this series. The series was just mediocre. He made a cute pair with Vivian Leung, though.
- The White-Haired Maiden (Taiwan)
Some might say it was quite an entertaining show, but it's sure not my cup of tea. I watched it for Chilam's sake and it's very disappointing.
It has some(very few) good moments but the thing is I never liked Taiwanese series and there's no exception for this one, too. Chilam's portrayal was all right, though. Anyway, another big complain would be
Chilam's hair...I mean what in the world were they thinking when they designed THAT haircut. I think you guys should avoid it.
- Return of The Cuckoo [Recommened]
Chilam acted as Man Chor, a mute guy who's quite optimistic and happy. He's very cute in this show. He did a great job portraying Man Chor, too.
Anyway, I didn't like the show much...well, I like it but not as much as I expected. Anyway, it's a nice show overall.
- Dare to Strike (Singapore)
I can't find it anywhere from where I live. But I read from ChiLam.net that he acted as an undercover cop.
