WTKR-TV / CH. 3 / CBS
WTKR NewsChannel 3 is a decent station overall. Their
newscasts are decent, and they have pretty good
anchors. Their set is o.k. It has a blue background
with fake monitors with the logo in them. They seem to
go overboard with weather. Just about every promo I
saw was for their Triple Doppler 3! I thought their
weather coverage was fine, though. I had trouble
getting them for some reason. Their tower is on
Nansemond Parkway in Suffolk, VA, right next to WVEC's
tower. I got WVEC fine. Maybe it was the cable.
WAVY-TV / Ch.10 / NBC
WVBT-TV / Ch.43 / FOX
Overall, WAVY, owned by LIN, is a pretty good station.
They have many experienced anchors and reporters.
Their set is pretty good. The graphics are pretty
good. They are blue, and are "wavy" (you can see waves
in the backgroud- no, not moving waves.)WAVY has good
music, the best music in the market. They seem to
focus a lot on weather, too. I didn't really like
their weather coverage as much, though, as the other
stations. WAVY produces a newscast for WVBT, the FOX
affiliate. On August 31st, 1998, WVBT and WTVZ, which
is now the WB affiliate, swapped affiliations (WVBT
became FOX, WTVZ became WB). WVBT launched a newscast
on that same date. WAVY and WVBT share anchors and
reporters, and WVBT uses WAVY's weather (Super Doppler
10). WOverall, WVBT's news is decent.
WVEC-TV / Ch.13 / ABC
Belo-owned WVEC was my favorite station for news,
overall. Their news is excellent. They have excellent
graphics. Their music is ok, it could be a little
better, though. It sounds like a jazz station does
their music! Their weather is excellent. They have a
SkyMax radar, which I liked. They didn't really go
overboard with weather. WVEC airs the least amount of
newscasts per week (excluding WVBT). I think they
should add some more newscasts. They are a very good station!
WESH-TV 2 (NBC)
A pretty cheeset NBC affiliate. The News has some poor talent, including a weekend Sports Anchor with a strong southern accent! The Anchors desk is covered with papers that the anchors appear to look at often. Are they trying to petend that there is no teleprompter? The constant paper shuffling is quite distracting, and definately brings the newscast down a notch. The Weekday news was much better, and tighter - but still...the papers! The stories were pretty much typical, locally intensive. The graphics are fair. The only thing graphically that is ugly is the "2" bug in the lower right of the screen. That same ugly "2" is also behind the news desk. The "2" logo just looks like something out of the 1970's.
WKMG-TV 6 (CBS)
Even though this is a "Post-Newsweek" station, WKMG "Newscenter 6" has Hearst-style graphics - meaning that the graphics on the news are a bit large and loud. It's not terrible, just a bit much. The "6" bug in the lower right is way too big, and although it is transparent, it has a beveled box around it that makes it look amaturish. They also dont take the bug down when another graphic from an outside news source (like the "ABC" bug) is in the same spot. The set has lots of blue, which makes it look outdated. The Sports segment of the news uses Blue stills with White "Chyron" stick lettering for scores and such...and they often get mushed up under the big "6" bug! The set behind the newsdesk is very cool. It has a three dimensional look to it, but it isn't overly busy. If they got rid of the blue color throughout everything it would improve the look big time. TV stations used to use blue as a background color back 15 years ago because that was the color needed to key fonts and images on screen. It isn't needed anymore.
WFTV-TV 9 (ABC)
"Central Florida's News Leader" has the best looking newscast in the Orlando area. They off-orange colored graphics look nice and blend well with the set. The stills used have blue in them, but no Chyron white stick fonts, a grey and blue look instead. Unfortunately this station also uses a lot of blue on the set, but they do have monitors in the background to jazz things up a bit. The news has a decent sense of urgency "coverage you can count on" with a slightly more serious feel than the other stations. The talent look and sound big market, no southern accents here. Again, the bug here is ugly. The bug has a solid white "9" with a red outer box, and the WFTV calls are underneath it in a silver area with black letters! Kind of obtrusive.
WHTM-TV27 (ABC)
A standard medium sized market ABC affiliate. They are no longer operating under the name of "WHTM NewsCenter," (a name used in the late 90's) they have reverted to the name which they were previously known as, "ABC27 News." They also built a new set in June of 1999 as part of their reinvention, along with a new logo and graphics, which are a bit cheesy - too big and bold.
WITF-TV33 (PBS)
A run of the mill PBS station, with really bad local productions. Their pledges look as bad as public access, so please pledge money, they need it!
WGAL-TV8 (NBC)
The NBC Affiliate licensed to Lancaster PA. Probably the best news around central PA. They had two good anchors sitting on a really nice set that has working TV monitors in the background. From the left side of the set you can see the Master Control room behind the anchors, making it look busy and happening. Too much non-news like High School Sports, but I guess that's the area!
WHP-TV21 (CBS)
Owned by Clear Channel, I was surprised at the cheesiness of WHP. The graphics were large solid Blue and White graphics, taking up a quarter of the screen! Similar to Baltimore's WBAL-TV, which is the only thing that I dislike about WBAL! The news is real heavy on sports, and the Sports Anchor was consistantly overmodulated! The video that they cut to was often green, probably due to a bad DVE. The anchor (again only one) was a very young looking female, which isn't good. The set had one decent thing, and that was the working monitors in the background, probably a copy of WGAL.

WDSU-TV/ CH. 6 / NBC
The thing I liked about WDSU, and the other New Orleans stations that I saw, was that the news was informative and not sensationalism. I was in New Orleans the dat before the hurricane hit - and the stations weren't trying to scare people, they were simply telling the news. The talent was good, and the set at WDSU was decent. The graphics were a bit loud, but not nearly as loud as the ABC affiliate, whose graphics covered half the screen!
WWL-TV / CH.4 / CBS
WWL-TV was a fast paced newscast with a decent set and good talent. The stories were a bit more sensational than WDSU, but not by much. The storm coverage was excellent and the graphics are nice. The station has a strong emphasis on sports, they do own WWL-AM Radio which is a News/Sports station....so it is to be expected.
KOMO / ABC / 4 (ABC Channel 4)
I liked their newscasts. Has a nice graphic of Mount Rainier in the background.
KING / 5 / NBC / (Channel 5) "The Home Team"
Again, I liked their newscasts too, even though I didn't watch them that much. I don't remember much about this station, though.
KIRO / 7 / CBS / (Channel 7) "KIRO 7 Eyewitness News"
I watched Eyewitness News the most. Don't ask why. I just liked it =)
KSTW / 11 / UPN / (Channel 11) "UPN 11 10:00 News"
I think that's what it's called. KSTW's 10 PM newscast was the 10:00 newscast I watched the most. I like hour-long newscasts. KCPQ's was only 30 min.
KCPQ / 13 / FOX / (Channel 13) "Q13"
As I noted in my KSTW review, KCPQ's 10 PM newscast is only 30 min. I like hour long newscasts.
