Kurt was born with his unique physical appearance, but his teleportation ability did not appear until puberty. He was found by the side of the road by a woman who travelled with a circus. The woman took Kurt with her and raised him as her son. Kurt became an accomplished acrobat under the tutelage of the circus acrobats. He became the start attraction of the circus, everyone assuming he was a regular human in a costume. During his time in the circus he became close friends with the natural children of the woman who had found him, Stefan and Jimaine.
A Texan millionaire who owned a circus in America heard of the circus and bought it, intending to move its best acts to his own circus. However, he wanted to place Kurt in the circus freakshow. Outraged, Kurt left and travelled to Germany where Stefan was. On arrival Kurt discovered that Stefan had gone mad and slain a few children. Kurt found Stefan and got into a fight with him. During the fight, Kurt accidentally broke Stefan's neck. The villagers found Kurt and assumed him to be a demon, responsible for the deaths of the children. As they were about to kill him, Xavier arrived and psychically froze them. Xavier had come to recruit Kurt into the X-Men. Kurt accepted the offer and took the name 'Nightcrawler'.
Nightcrawler recently discovered that Mystique is his real mother.
