When Wolverine was about 12 years old his father, John Howlett, was shot and killed by their recently fired grounds keeper Thomas Logan. Witnessing this triggered Wolverines latent abilities and his claws extended, impaling Thomas Logan. Wolverines mother shunned him because of his abilities so he fled with childhood friend Rose. They travelled to British Columbia where Wolverine gained a job in a quarry under the false name Logan.
After a few years Wolverines boss at the quarry asked Rose to marry him. Before the quarry master and Rose could leave, Thomas Logan's son, Dog showed up and attempted to kill Wolverine to avenge his father. During the fight, Rose attempted to stop it and ended up being impaled by Wolverines claws. After this Wolverine decided he could no longer live among humans and went into the wilderness to live.
He possesses memories of living as a samurai in Japan, an operative for the CIA and memories of his time in the wilderness. He also spent time in the army during World War II, during which time he met and worked with Captain America. Sometime after Wolverines time in the army he was taken by Dr Cornelius as part of the 'Weapon X' programme. The purpose of this project was to develop and perfect a technique to bond the indestrucible element 'adamantium' to a human skeleton. Wolverine was chosen because of his healing abilities. During the process memory implants were placed in Wolverines brain, making him forget alot of things that had happened and making what memories he does have suspect.
After his experience with the 'Weapon X' programme, Wolverine was conscripted to lead Alpha Flight which was Canada's government run super team. During this span, he was approached by Charles Xavier who was looking for mutants to help free the X-Men from the island of Krakoa. Wolverine left Alpha Flight to help Xavier and once the X-Men had been rescued he decided to stay on with the X-Men for various reason, a major one being he had fallen in love with Jean Grey.
During an encounter with the evil mutant Magneto, Wolverine attempted to use his claws. Magneto used his power over magnetism to rip the adamantium alloy from Wolverines body. The injuries Wolverine sustained disabled his healing ability for a short time, and he also discovered that the claws that he assumed to be a result of the 'Weapon X' project were actually a natural mutation. He now possesses bone claws which are part of his natural skeleton.
