Abraham (Abe) Obstfeld and Lou Obstfeld were brothers with a background in printing and marking. The company name, Markwell derives from their products which were crayons and other devices used for marking.
Based on the information provided by the Markwell Company, the brothers started marketing staplers in the early 1920's. Their product was an Acme Stapler manufactured by the Acme Staple Company.
Within a short time, the brothers were able to market their own stapler. This was the Model 176 which was the forerunner of the RB Tacker.
Prior to World War II, Markwell was one of the top four stapler companies in America.
