ANDROID From the ashes of crap comes...a pretty good movie
Cobbled together on a near-zero budget on sets left over from the unwatchable Battle Beyond The Stars, this movie nevertheless impressed me somewhat. It's far more SF than horror, but it's certainly got its horror elements.
Klaus Kinski, doing his best to look like Harlan Ellison, stars as an isolated (and slightly mad) scientist conducting experiments in, apparently, android construction. He must've been doing some good work, because he's got an android assistant, played by Don Opper, who also co-wrote the film. (Opper would later play a similar role in Critters, which he also wrote) Just why Opper appears to have refused acting credit, I don't know. (Max 404 is listed as being played by "HIMSELF") The two of them live happily on their space station, until all the shit hits the fan at the same time. The plug is pulled on the doc's experiments. Three space faring fugitives are allowed on board, and it's later revealed that they're killers and thugs! (not like you couldn't tell) One of them is female, and a romantic triangle develops. Now expand that to a quadrangle, because the doc's got a new creation on the way, and she's got tits. Then the cops come, and Max 404 chooses his side...and takes action in a way that you'd never see Data do.
The acting is pretty good all around - Opper's performance takes some getting used to, though. His interpretation of a near-human android is like that of a very curious, enthusiastic child. But it grows on you, even though I was left wondering why a scientist would go through all the trouble to create an android and then give him crooked teeth. (and why a space-hardened future thug would need to be told just what an android is) The FX are bad - I mean, REALLY bad - but there are a lot of nice little touches, like how when Max packs to leave, he makes sure to bring along spare fingers and eyes. And the ending's great.
Quite good, overall, with some creepy moments. Give 'er a look, if you're in the mood for this kind of thing. |
