THE FURY It's De Palmariffic
I guess it's true, I really like DePalma's movies. Even his really bad ones. Opinions on this guy are all over the map, but it's not often, at any rate, that we see somebody call his movies dull.
Kirk Douglas stars as a secret agent, and father of a psychic teenaged son. His bosses try to kill him (and fail) and steal his son (and succeed) - so he spends the next year or so AWOL, trying to steal him back. He tries to enlist the aid of his boss's latest pupil, a teenaged girl played by Amy Irving, who surely hasn't had to so much as get out of bed since she divorced Steven Spielberg.
Even at two hours, this movie just zips along; it's more of a chase film (somewhere between Scanners and The Fugitive) than a horror movie. The plot's a lot of fun, the performances are all great, and DePalma definitely knows how to hold your attention (when he films a whole body exploding, he films it -and shows it - from THIRTEEN different angles) (yes, I counted).
Watch for Daryl Hannah, Dennis Franz, and the Maytag repair guy in small roles. Adapted by John Farris from his own novel, which I haven't read. Definitely give it a look. Thirteen angles. Damn. |
