THE HEARSE
Finally, a movie I actually like!

I might mave seemed like a cranky bastard lately, bashing every movie I see left and right - well, it's because every movie I've seen lately sucked.  At last, I get to a movie I enjoyed.

This is an atmospheric, often downright scary little flick about a city girl who inherits a country house - so when she moves out there to fix the place up, she finds that everybody in town dislikes her as soon as they find out which house she's staying in. There's also a mysterious hearse following her around, and you'd better believe it ain't the welcome wagon.

Stars Trish Van Devere, who brings a smart pluckiness to her role, even though she's saddled with too many "am I dreaming or am I insane?" moments. Also features David Gautreaux, who was gonna be a Vulcan in the aborted second Star Trek TV series. Like The Silence Of The Lambs would a decade later (and with a lot  more subtlety and grace), this movie pays special attention to the kind of sexual pressures that men put on women. In SotL, half the time the men don't even realize it - here, it's a lot of hooting and leering. Not exactly understated, but it adds to the air of omnipresent menace for this poor lass.

Creepy and well-made, although some scenes are so dark that it's hard to see anything at all on video (I imagine it was a little clearer on the big screen). Watch for Christopher McDonald sporting some bad hair and a really high voice.
