STRIPPED TO KILL For better or for worse, it's like being in a real strip bar
You know how the more strippers you see, the more your attention just kinda wanders off?
Found this baby in the Drama section. The SF section was looking a little thin for horror-like material; I decided to have a look in the others, and besides, I came across Dream Lover, where superfox Madchen Amick takes it ALL off, baby! I figured it was an omen, calling out to me, "Brian...look here...change your fucking shirt..."
Most of the "drama" in this movie takes place at the Rock Bottom strip club, which is so classy they've got "WOMEN" crossed out on the change room door and marked over with "SLUTS". When I say most, I really mean it - I never saw this much on-stage stripper action in ninety minutes in my life, and that includes trips to strip clubs. Anyway, some whacko out there is killing the girls working there, and a police detective goes undercover as a dancer to catch the baddie.
It all sounds pretty lame and routine, and it is, but I found myself mostly enjoying this one's first half, mostly for its sense of humor. Norman Fell's amusing as the strip club's manager, and the script contains no small number of funny moments.
Not all the laughs are intentional, either; one can't help but chuckle when one wonders just how much must be left of a body after it's been dragged under a truck for a hundred miles. And didn't any other drivers notice this?
Unfortunately, things seriously bog down in the second half, when the film concentrates on the largely unsuccessful thriller elements. However, I do have to admit to some surprise at the revelation of the killer - if you see it, you'll know what I mean.
Not too bad, but rather poor overall. Must've done some okay business; it did spawn a sequel. Both films were directed by Katt Shea Ruben, who most recently gave us The Rage: Carrie 2. |
