This area is the hunting grounds for Babushka's people. Hopefully
in the fall there will be young bulls hanging around with the cows. The
moose liver is shared with elders and family members almost immediately
after the bull is harvested. Most of the women from Babushka's family
can and do hunt for moose when the men are away working and they can be
quite successful. The Spruce Beetle killed most of our timber in
and around Ninilchik. Loggers cleared much of the land and the new
growth began with grass and wildflowers. Later willows and alder
will send up new growth. This should help the moose population as
it provides feeding grounds.
I
have a calf hidden in the tall grass.
I
just know the grass is sweeter over the hill. These pictures were
taken in the Ninilchik area on Native Land.
