RAS AL KHAIMA

 

Independent Postal Administration Cancels

 

During the Independent postal administration seven different cancels were used in Ras al Khaima. When the post office of Ras al Khaima was opened in 1964, two cancels (Type 1 & 2) were introduced. The first two types (Type 1 & 2) read Ras al Khaima as “RAS EL KHAIMAH” before it was corrected in the later types. Two unusual cancels was known used in Ras al Khaima (Type 3 & 4) and they are rare used in covers. The most common type that used in Ras al Khaima is (Type 7), its also the only type that continued to be used during the UAE postal administration.

 

 

The Small Circle Cancel

 

 

 

 

Type 1

 

The first Ras al Khaima cancel is the small circle cancel (Type 1) inscribed “RAS EL-KHAIMAH P.O. / A. G.” in English and Arabic, the “A. G.” stand for Arabian Gulf. The cancel tied with the violet ink, and its size is 27˝mm in diameter. Note the “EL” and the “H” in “RAS EL KHAIMAH” which will not appear in later types of Ras al Khaima cancels.

 

 


 

 

The Registered Small Circle Cancel

 

 

 

 

Type 2

 

The second type is copy of the first Ras al Khaima cancel with "R." stand for Registered and used for Registered mail only. The cancel (Type 2) inscribed “RAS EL-KHAIMAH PO / A. G. / R” in English and Arabic, and the “A. G.” stand for Arabian Gulf.

 

 


 

 

Al Jazirah Cancel

 

 

 

 

Type 3

 

The Al Jazirah cancel (Type 3) is the most difficult and unusual type that used in Ras al Khaima. The cancel inscribed “AL JAZIRAH P.O.” in English and Arabic in violet ink. The “JAZIRAH” is an Arabic word, which means, “ISLAND”.

 

 


 

 

Al Kharran cancel

 

 

 

 

Type 4

 

Al Kharran cancel (Type 4), another unusual type that used in Ras al Khaima during the independent postal administration. The cancel inscribed "AL-KHARRAN P. O. / A. G." in English and Arabic, and its size is 35mm in diameter.

 

 


 

 

The Ras al Khaima Circle Cancel

 

 

 

 

Type 5

 

The Ras al Khaima circle cancel with a date rectangular box (Type 5) came into use during the year 1965. The cancel inscribed "RAS AL KHAIMA" in English and Arabic. It's size a 29˝ mm in diameter. Note: the spelling of

RAS AL KHAIMA” in this type was corrected.

 

 


 

 

The Registered Circle Cancel

 

 

 

Registered Circle Cancel - Type 4

 

Type 6

 

The registered circle cancel (Type 6) is a copy of the (Type 5), the only different is that this type introduced to be used for registered mail and therefore "Registered" in Arabic and "R" in English were added in the cancel. The cancel inscribed "RAS AL KHAIMA / R." in English and "RAS AL KHAIMA / REGISTERED" in Arabic.

 

 

 


 

 

The Last Independent Cancel

 

 

 

Last Independent Circle Cancel - Type 5

 

Type 7

 

The last circle cancel (Type 7) with two lines separate the upper Arabic part date, and the lower English part is the most common type that used during the independent postal administration. The cancel inscribed “RAS AL KHAIMA” in English and Arabic and was known used during the UAE postal administration.
