Compact Annual 1963 Outline:
This was a mannered and upmarket drama of life at a glossy woman's magazine headed by a strong minded female editor blayed by Jean Harvey.

The magazine Compact was owned by publishing house Harmon Enterprises.

Within the first six months there were nine romances and three weddings within the staff.

Details

373 x 30 minute episodes were produced.
The show went out on Tuesdays and Thursdays so as not to clash with Coronation Street.
The series was originally due to run for just three months.
From April 1964 the series had an omnibus edition.
Over 500 cast appeared in the first two years.
The BBC hierarchy were uncomfortable with the series and dispite its success decided to cancel the show.
Series creators Hazel Adair and Peter Ling went on to create Crossroads.

Greetings from Los Angeles, California.
I have visited your UK soap website and have enjoyed reading about the great british soaps past and present. I am a collector of vintage soap opera episodes and other general soap opera ephemera and was wondering if you had any ideas how I might go about acquiring some episodes of vintage UK shows?

Can you tell me please whether the soap 'Compact' was the first soap televised by the BBC in the sixties.I note Compact was shown in January 1962. If not do you know of an earlier soap in the preceding two years?
Amazingly I cannot find a web side for the BBC anywhere!

Thank you for your enquiery regarding the BBC soap 'Compact'.
The first soap to be made by the BBC was in fact 'The Grove Family' from 1954-1957.

Ronald Allen who played Ian Harmon when to to appear in United and Crossroads.

Marcia Ashton who played Lily went on to appear in Brookside.

Vincent Ball went on to play Kevin McArther in Crossroads.

Brenda Kaye also played Kate Harvester in 199 Park Lane.

Basil Moss who played Alan Drew went on to play Peter Tyson in the radio series Waggoners Walk.

Donald Morley went on to play Fred Bolton in Coronation Street.

Morris Barry who was a producer on this show also worked on 199 Park Lane and Angles.

Julia Smith was producer also worked on Angels, EastEnders, The Newcomers and Eldorado.
