01.21.06  //: It's your world, what NOT to do:// ..."7:30 PM. Vang Vieng, Laos PDR . We've just returned from a 3-4 hour trip down the Mekong. Showing no lack of entrepreneurial spirit  in a Communist country, local teenagers at riverside stops sold 10-20,000 kip ($1-2 US) 24oz. bottles of Beer Lao and bammer spliffs. uninformed farang... Arriving in late from Vientiane, yet eager to make the most of the remaining day, we started out on the river about an hour & a half before sunset. As dusk neared, we were forced to abandon the river and continue on foot, as light & temperature fell rapidly, and as the mosquito population came out to feed along the river's surface. After a somewhat tense situation struggling in considerable darkness to find any marked paths,(in what we knew to be some of the most heavily mined land in the world) we blindly stumbled upon one of the main arteries leading back into town. Shortly thereafter, we happened upon a random tuk-tuk carrying two English girls who had similarly been caught too far out of town in the darkness, and caught a ride back into the town centre.  Dinner was pad thai, spring rolls, and vegtarian pizza for less than 40,000 kip at a local chillout spot / restaurant overrun with expats & backpackers. Slept early. "

I came accross the above excerpt written about a year ago in a journal I forgot I had started & had to laugh at our poor judgment. let's hope better sense will prevail next time around..
