The Ultimate Sports Grillers fell 6-5 to the #1 seed Blaine Fusion in 11 innings on Saturday afternoon at Joe Faber Field. Ultimate rallied from an early 3-0 deficit to take a 5-4 lead after six innings, but the bats fell silent and several base running mistakes helped seal the Grillers' fate. Ultimate also left 13 men on base in the game. The Grillers managed eight hits on offense, led by Mike Holman, who went 2-for-6 with two RBIs, and Brent Putz, who went 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs. Josh Vorpahl, making his first start on the mound in three years, pitched the first 10 innings for the Grillers, allowing all five runs (four earned) on seven hits, three walks, and he struck out 14. Paul Eich picked up the loss on the mound in the 11th.
After falling behind 3-0 after one innings, the Grillers scored two in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Quinn that scored Andy Waletzko and a base hit by Putz that scored Casey Haugen. Blaine got an unearned run in the bottom of the inning to take a 4-2 lead, but the Grillers came back with three runs in the top of the sixth to take the lead. Putz was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Haugen and Holman singled to score Jason Wald and Quinn. Blaine answered in the bottom of the eighth with a run to tie the game. In the 11th, a bloop single, a double, an intentional walk, and an infield single gave Blaine the winning run with one out.
