The Ultimate Sports Grillers lost 8-7 to the Cold Spring Rockies in an exhibition game on Tuesday night at Springer Park in Cold Spring. The Grillers led 7-6 going into the bottom of the ninth, but a walk, sacrifice bunt, a walk, and two singles gave the Rockies the come from behind win. Ultimate did pound out 15 hits in the game, though, but three costly errors led to three unearned runs in the game. Leading the offense was Brent Schloe, who finished 4-for-5 with a double, two runs scored, and an RBI. Mike Holman also went 3-for-5 with a double, run scored, and an RBI; Aaron Rocheleau was 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI; and Andy Waletzko and Jason Wald were both 2-for-4. Rocheleau also started on the mound and went six innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits, six walks, and struck out five. Holman picked up the loss in relief.
The Grillers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-out RBI-single by Rocheleau that scored Schloe from second after he doubled. The Rockies came back with single runs in the third and fifth to take a 2-1 lead. Ultimate tied it in the top of the sixth on Jason Kotschevar's RBI-single that scored Lincoln Haugen from third. The Rockies scored again in the bottom of the inning to take a 3-2 lead. In the top of the seventh, the Grillers strung five hits out of six batters together to score four runs. Haugen led off with a bunt that resulted in a two-base error and Holman followed two batters later with a double to score Haugen. A groundout by Kotschevar moved Holman to third and with two outs, Schloe, Rocheleau, Waletzko, and Wald all singled to give the Grillers a 6-3 lead. Cold Spring came back with two more runs in the seventh to cut the lead to 6-5. Ultimate scored again in the eighth on a single by Holman that was mishandled by the right fielder and allowed Brent Putz to score from second. Cold Spring scored an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth to make the score 7-6 and two in the bottom of the ninth to win the game.
