The Ultimate Sports Grillers defeated the Saint Stephen Steves 3-2 in the opening round of the annual Saint Cloud Sports Inc. Amateur Baseball Tournament on Friday night at Dick Putz Field. The nine inning game was played in just 1 hour and 45 minutes. Chad Schwegel improved to 4-0 on the summer after picking up the complete game victory on the mound. He allowed two runs on five hits, walked one, and struck out five. Offensively, Brent Schloe led the Grillers by going 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Casey Haugen and Andy Waletzko both finished 2-for-4 and Jason Kotschevar added an RBI-double. The Grillers had nine hits in the game.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning when Schloe led off with a single and moved to third on an error that also allowed Aaron Rocheleau to reach base. Kotschevar followed with his double to make the score 1-0. Ultimate scored two more times in the fifth on back-to-back-to-back singles by Mike Holman, Casey Haugen, and Schloe and a sacrifice fly by Rocheleau. Saint Stephen scored their two runs in the top of the seventh, but Schwegel didn't allow a base runner after that.
