The Ultimate Sports Grillers won their first game of the 2005 season with an 8-4 victory over the Sartell Muskies on Sunday at a windy Champion Field in Sartell. Chad Schwegel, making his first start of the season after a bout with elbow tendonitis, went seven strong innings to pick up the win on the mound. He allowed one unearned run on seven hits and four walks and he struck out 11 batters in the game. Mike Holman's 3-run home run in the top of the sixth inning increased the Grillers' lead to 6-1 and Brent Schloe added a 2-run double in the top of the ninth for some insurance. Holman finished 2-for-5 with the home run, two runs scored, and three RBIs, and Brent Schloe went 3-for-4 with the double, run scored, and two RBIs to lead the Grillers' offense. Casey Haugen doubled and scored twice for Ultimate as well.
Ultimate scored its first run in the top of the second inning on a two-out RBI-single by Brent Putz that scored Jason Kotschevar from third. The Grillers added two more in the top of the third after Casey Haugen reached on an error and Brent Schloe and Jason Wald followed with singles to load the bases. An error and a double play scored Haugen and Schloe. Sartell scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth to cut the lead to 3-1, but a leadoff double by Aaron Rocheleau and a walk to Putz in the top of the sixth set up Mike Holman's 3-run home run to left center to open up the lead for good. The home run was the Grillers' first of the season. Ultimate added two more runs in the top of the ninth inning after Holman singled, Haugen doubled, and Schloe doubled them both in to make the score 8-1. Sartell added three runs in the bottom of the ninth on a 3-run home run of their own, but it was not enough and the Grillers moved to 1-1 on the season.
