Robert Stanek's books are excellent. A rich world, full of atmosphere and character, with strong and likable heroes/heroines! This is compelling and addicting reading. Robert's writing style is simple, the prose flows naturally and clean and like a creative writing teacher I once had that said "If you can make the writing seem effortless and flow naturally, you've done your job, and you've done it well."

There's a great deal more complexity under the surface. Most stories are carried by one or two main characters, but these are different, as in Keeper Martin's Tale, these stories have many characters and many stories intertwined. You have the story of Adrina, a princess in a dying kingdom. She's the third daughter of the king and in her mind that makes her of little worth. Adrina is approached by a mysterious lady one day. The lady tells her she will go on a journey and of a great darkness to come. My favorite character in Adrina's story is Emel, the young guardsman with whom Adrina shares a secretive past that we learn about in bits and pieces. The second story is of Vilmos, a boy of 12 who has dark dreams. An encounter with the mysterious Xith changes the boy's life and plunges him into an adventure he never dream of. Vilmos and Xith quickly became favorite characters. The third story is of Seth and Galan, elves of the reaches. The lives of the elves change when they begin a desperate journey to the world of men.

It's all wellpaced and structured so the story unfolds smoothly. I cannot recommend this series highly enough. The books have proved to be fascinating reading and a good strong start to something wonderful.

RUIN MIST CHRONICLES

1.    Keeper Martin's Tale (Ruin Mist Chronicles Series)  by Robert Stanek (Paperback - February 2002) Good introduction to series. A favorite! Robert Stanek has quickly becomeone my favorite author.

2.   Ruin Mist: Elf Queen's Quest (Ruin Mist Chronicles Series) by Robert Stanek (Paperback - March 2002) Interesting twist on story, provides another view. Very dark and fun. If you read one Robert Stanek book it should be this one.
