Hordak is Commander of the planet Etheria, leading a band of ruthless warriors to do his bidding.
Hordak,
although it would be revealed that he detested and despised all
things magical [17], was
trained in the art of sorcery by an old Etherian magician called
Noah. [51] However, all the hard
years spent coaching Hordak were soon turned from good to evil
when he took his new-found
skills to Eternia in the vain hope of conquering the planet, but
his efforts were no match for the
enchanted magic of Castle Grayskull and the will and
determination of King Randor's mighty
soldiers. [04]
The
Horde used to be based at Snake Mountain on Eternia, now home to
Skeletor, who was
actually Hordak's student at the time. However, their friendship
was soon to faulter when
Hordak realised that Eternia was one planet he was not going to
conquer. Hordak went to
capture Princess Adora of Eternia from the King and Queen with
Skeletor - he escaped, but
Skeletor was forced to reveal the location of the Horde's base.
Skeletor was left in the hands of his
enemies and Hordak was betrayed by his pupil to those enemies and
so spouting a long-term
mutual hatred. [04] This would be the focus of
several instalments, in which Hordak would show
his desire to conquer Eternia[18, 35], and two of which seeing two
Horde members attempting to
overthrow their leader, aided by Skeletor - Catra [51] and Shadow Weaver [56].
Along
with Shadow Weaver and Chakra, Hordak helped bring Adora up - so
whereas Skeletor
was his favourite follower on Eternia, Adora had stolen this
crown by the time he had returned to
Etheria. [01]
Hordak's
dictatorial power comes, we assume, from his brother, Horde Prime,
who is leader of
Horde World and countless oher planets. The Etherian warlord also
has a nephew, Prime's son
Prince Zed. [11] This, in turn, makes Hordak a
Prince too - presumably of Horde World.
The
Horde has attacked and conquered many lands and galaxies and the
moves from place to
place tend to be unexpected too. [39] But on Etheria, Hordak and his
Horde are based at the Fright
Zone, a dark and dismal factory-type fortress that the tyrant
uses to forsee operations and hatch
fiendish plans. Nothing in the Fright Zone can be remotely
beautiful, as beauty of all kinds tends to
escape Hordak. [40, 63, 92]
In his
fury, Hordak would wreck the Fright Zone in his anger on a number
of occasions [01, 13, 15],
but his anger would tend to be directed at his subjects more than
anything else. Even though the
Horde witch, Shadow Weaver devised better plans, Hordak would
blame her for any of his own
bad ideas [89] and would constantly drop his
minions into the watery-depths of the Fright Zone for
amusement; most often, Mantenna would be the victim of this
assault [12, 49, 83] but Grizzlor [53]
and Catra [78] would also face the plunge on
several occasions. However, fate would turn on the
leader of the Horde as he too was sentenced to the trap-door
treatment a couple of times; by
Mantenna, as a mark of revenge [17], and by Horde Prime, as a
punishment [49].
Early
episodes would show Hordak even getting angry with Imp [03, 08] but this little creature
would soon become Hordak's one and only friend, supposedly only
because he was scared of the
other Hordesmen.
Hordak's
magical abilities were somewhat limited. Aside from a strange,
almost bionic arm that
enabled him to teleport himself and others from one location to
another in one episode [03],
the ability to stretch his arms to supreme length in another [17] and a peculiar eye laser
introduced
later on [79], his most memorable and indeed
prominent power was his ability to transform his
body parts into other objects, such as a missile [36], scissors [39] and a net [69].

Originally
portrayed as a savage, cold-hearted dictator, Hordak would get
his just-desserts by
being the subject of ridicule at the hands of such comic
characters as Mantenna [17], Orko [33]
and Perfuma. [63]
His
greed is another thing that creates Hordak's character. Not only
would he want to rule land
provinces [12, 41, 76], but also those existing on or
in water. [36, 40, 72] He attempts to enslave
these places and force them to work for the Horde, often in harsh
conditions such as in mining
operation. [24, 29, 54]
However,
the rebels are easily the biggest cause of Hordak's woes. He has
tried many a time to
dispose of their kind, but with no such luck. Large operations
such as trapping them inside the
Whispering Woods [13, 27] and freezing time [55] have backfired, as have
smaller oppurtunities
like shrinking the rebels [25] and trapping their souls in
paintings. [88]
As well
as the rebels, Hordak has also seemingly had trouble with telling
the truth: "Hordak is a
master of lies!" said She-Ra on one occasion [45] and she was not joking. The
Evil Horde leader
would be caught telling fibs to a group of school children [26], Spinnerella [78] and the
Princess of Power herself. [83] However, as we've come to
learn in a couple of instances, Hordak
may well and truly despise the rebels, but they're not a patch on
his hatred for Horde
Inspectors! [13, 87]
