Colorado Rockies 7
Atlanta Braves 6 (12 innings)

AUGUST 22, 2000

DENVER -- Brent Mayne was solid in relief. John Rocker was not. Mayne, a catcher, became the first position player in nearly 32 years to record a victory and rookie Adam Melhuse picked an opportune time for his first major league hit as the Colorado Rockies posted a wild 7-6 triumph over the Atlanta Braves that also featured a brawl.

Mayne tossed a scoreless top of the 12th inning to become the first position player since Rocky Colavito to notch a victory. Colavito acccomplished the feat in the first game of a doubleheader against the Detroit Tigers while with the New York Yankees on August 25, 1968.

The first non-pitcher in Rockies history to face a batter, Mayne allowed a hit and walk but got reigning National League Most Valuable Player Chipper Jones on a squib to third base with two outs and the go-ahead run in scoring position. He was the 10th pitcher used by Colorado, tying the NL mark for an extra-inning game.

"(Manager Buddy Bell) asked me if I could go. So I kind of volunteeered," Mayne said. "I said, `Yeah, I can run it up there.' I wasn't that nervous until (Rafael) Furcal hit that ball back at me. Then I was like, `I may get killed here.' Then I started feeling it a little bit."

"(Mayne) got somebody out, that's why he won," said Atlanta's Andruw Jones, who walked against Mayne. "He just had a pitch that he probably didn't mean to throw to Chipper, but he got him out. I ain't gonna let no position player strike me out. I just went up there relaxed and he walked me. It was just one of those games where things go the opposite way."

Rocker (1-1) took over in the bottom of the 12th and allowed a leadoff single to Neifi Perez. Todd Helton, who was 1-for-4 with two intentional walks as his average dropped to .398, singled to right to extend his hitting streak to 14 games. With runners at the corners and the outfield in, Jeffrey Hammonds lined out to shallow center field.

Stan Belinda came on and struck out Terry Shumpert looking. Jeff Cirillo was intentionally walked to load the bases and bring up Melhuse, who was recalled from Class AAA Colorado Springs on Monday when two-time batting champion Larry Walker went on the disabled list. Hitless in his first six at-bats, Melhuse looped a soft line drive over the head of Walt Weiss and into short left field for the game-winner.

"Getting your first hit, I mean there's probably so much elation that goes with that," Melhuse said. "But then to get a bases-loaded, two-out hit in extra innings against the Braves, the Braves of all teams. I hope I'll be able to sleep tonight."

Much of the positional juggling on both sides was a result of a benches-clearing melee in the top of the 11th. Colorado pitcher John Wasdin hit Andres Galarraga with a 3-2 pitch and the Braves first baseman charged the mound, resulting in the ejections of Wasdin, Galarraga and Bell.

"I'm not trying to hit a guy, especially in a 6-6 game," Wasdin said. "I'm just trying to be aggressive. There's no reason to put a winning run on first base. No, it wasn't intentional."

"I got mad because he hit me," Galarraga said. "I can't be happy about that. When he started talking (stuff), that's when I had to jump in on him. I don't know why he started talking after he hit me. So that's why I jumped him right away. To get him back. Anytime that happens, I have to fight, no question."

Rocker, who lost for ths first time since September 5, refused to talk with reporters after the game, demanding to be left alone. Despite the loss the Braves remained 2 1/2 games ahead of the New York Mets in the NL East Divison.

The Braves got two runs in the first inning on a triple by Todd Walker and 6-1 after four. But Atlanta chipped away, beginning in the fifth as Andruw Jones homered, B.J. Surhoff had an RBI double and Galarraga a run-scoring single.

Chipper Jones' 29th homer in the seventh got the Braves within 6-5 and Javy Lopez tied the game later in the inning with an infield hit that plated Surhoff.

The Rockies had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the ninth against Kerry Ligtenberg. With runners on first and third and two outs, Cox elected to intentionally walk Helton and the move paid off when Jeffrey Hammonds fouled out.

Atlanta wasted an opportunity in the 10th as Bobby Chouinard worked his way out of a jam.

Before Mayne, the last position player to get a decision as pitcher was Los Angeles third baseman Jeff Hamilton, who took the loss as the Dodgers were defeated in a 22-inning game at Houston on June 3, 1989.

The last National League position player to get a win had been Pirates second baseman Johnny O'Brien, who allowed three hits in 2 1/3 scoreless innings against the Phillies on July 3, 1956.
