History
This radical airplane was designed at Farnborough by the German designers in 1947. It was intended to attain Mach 1.24 at 36,000 ft, possess an initial climb rate of 14,000 ft/min and a service ceiling of more than 60,000 ft. Designed around the AJ65 Avon turbojet (6,000 lb thrust) this plane was to have a maximum power endurance of 30 minutes. The most unusual feature of this design was the pilot's cockpit located inside the air intake. This layout was to give the aircraft the flawless aerodynamic shape needed to achieve such a high by 1947 standards speed. Take off was to be effected with the aid of a jettisonable trolley, the landing was to be catered for by two retractable landing skids, capable of absorbing the stresses of 160 mph touchdown. The project was extremely advanced for those days, too many problems couldn't be solved in late 40ies. Finally it was cancelled in favour of more conventional designs.
