History
The first attempt of the Yakovlev bureau in the helicopter
design was undertaken in 1944. The first project was called
simply "Yak" and lacked any other designation. The experimental "co-axial" scheme of this copter was applied before
Kamov's helicopters of such type entered series production
and became widely used.
Powered with one M-11 FR-1 radial engine "Yak" made its
maiden flight in 1947 and showed satisfactory performance
during 75 evaluation flights. The serious problem appeared
on the speeds exceeding 30 km/h, when the aircraft became
unstable and hard to control. On that reason the "Yak" flight
testing was soon discontinued.
The design work on "co-axial" copters concentrated in the
Kamov OKB, while Yakovlev tried the conventional "Yak-100"
and two-rotor "Yak-24" helicopters.
