Euro 3000 2001

Season results

Brazil's Felipe Massa, the reigning Eurocup and Italian Formula Renault champion, dominated the inaugural season of Euro 3000 (replacing Italian F3000). Massa won six of the eight races in his yellow Draco Lola after showing his pace throughout winter testing. An F1 contract with Sauber was his reward. The only other winners were veteran Thomas Biagi (GP Racing), who finished second in the championship, and young Italian Salvatore Tavano (Sighinolfi). Former International series driver Alex Müller made an F3000 return with Team Ghinzani, the German taking third in the standings.

Notes:

*Some sources said Giuseppe Burlotti (I) raced in the final round in car #24 Fortec Italia, but according to Autosprint Polo Villaamil (E) raced.

Team Great Wall formerly First GP.

Grids for 2001 were limited to 14 teams (28 drivers).

Other teams that were rumoured to enter the 2001 series included: a new Argentinian team, with Brian Smith (RA) as driver, possibly joined by Nicolas Filiberti (RA) (if it couldn't get an Int'l F3000 entry; it later reportedly decided to enter Mariano Altuna (RA) in FPA for 2001, and attempt to move into one of the F3000 series in 2002); a new Dutch team; Super Nova, possibly with Giuseppe Burlotti (I); Adrian Campos Motorsport, which went as far as testing drivers before pulling out in February 2001; Team Astromega; B&C Competition; Celestine Trophy Team; CF Motorsport, a new team set up by Fabio Fortina (ex-Durango sporting director) and Carlos Canali; EC Motorsport; Scuderia Famá; John Village Automotive; Orbit Motorsport; Arden Team Russia, which pulled out to concentrate on its International F3000 season; Monaco Motorsport, which left the series and had a short-lived return to International F3000 after merging with Kid Jensen Racing.
