Some of you may be eager to know the significance of the Ursua Coat of Arms, but any analysis of its meaning can be no more precise than an interpretation of a dream. Often, particularly in commercially produced coat of arms, there is a neat presentation of the meanings of each feature of the arm (e.g. a lion or an eagle represents courage, a sword represents martial skill, etc.), but there is simply no way to know what meaning the symbol on a shield had to the person who designed it. They may be strictly decorative with no significance at all!

This is not to say that there is nothing to learn from studying the overall design and charges depicted in it for the purpose of constructing a family history.

So, here we go:

In a field of gold ...

In heraldic practice the color gold was always used to depict nobility, honor and courage. We already know that the name Ursua is of noble origin and as you will find out from the section "
History: Juan de Ursua ," honor and courage is definitely a dominant Ursua trait.

... three black pigeons in a triangular position ...

The Basque word "usoa" means dove and there are those who think that the surname Ursua was derived from that word. There is no sure way of explaining why there are three of them and why black pigeons were chosen instead of white. As for the triangular arrangement, it is probably safe to say that the choice was purely aesthetic.

... surrounded by an  engrailed border ...

In Spain and France, bordering is a practice that is normally applied to the coat of arms used by a son to differentiate it from the one used by the father.

... of blue.

In the symbolism of heraldry, blue signifies piety and sincerity.
