Since Tombstone is famous for its history, here's a brief summary concentrating on the town's history
Tombstone has a very famous history with the gunfight at the OK Corral between the Earps and the Clantons
in 1881. But the town began when a man named Ed Schieffelin came to Camp Huachuca with soldiers and left to begin
propecting in the area. He was told he would probably find his tombstone instead of silver. When he filed his first claim,
he named it Tombstone. Once word went out about the rich lodes in Tombstone area, the town was given this as its name.
Mining boomed in Tombstone for seven years until rising underground water caused operations to cease. The famous Wyatt Earp
gunbattle in the OK Corral was an indication of the lawlessness and violence that took place in Tombstone in its heyday.
More information about the history of Tombstone may be found at the city library, the Courthouse Museum and local bookstores.

Boothill Grave yard

Boothill Graveyard was founded in 1878 on a slight hill just north west of the city. This historical cemetery was the burial ground, for all of Tombstones earliest pioneers. The name Boothill comes from the fact that many of these graves were filled with people that died suddenly or violently with their boots on! Some two hundred fifty known people were buried in Boothill, before it officially closed its doors in 1884. Among the residents of this place, you will find many old west characters, including "Old Man" Clanton, Billy Clanton, Tom and Frank McLaury, Lester Moore, Marshall Fred White and many more...

Crystal Palace Saloon
![]() 93 kb |
Built in 1879 by Frederick Wehrfritz, this was the place where Mine officials, gunmen, prospectors, rustlers, lawyers, stage coach bandits, cowboys, lawmen, gamblers and homesteaders met. The proximity of the Crystal Palace to Tombstone's leading commercial houses, coupled with its superior decor and service along with strictly honest gambling rooms created its success as Tombstone's finest, best-appointed bar in a town of nearly a hundred saloons.
