One of the greatest extracurricular activities to do here is join the Trojan Marching Band. Here are just a couple of the perks you get as a band member: *free admission to most sporting events *front row seats at every football game (silks only :) ) *annual Weekender trip *Chicago trip ever other year (this year is a Chicago year!) *plenty of random TV, movie, and parade appearances *lots and lots more! If you are interested in any other section of the band, you can find a ton of more information at uscband.com. If you are interested in being a silk, here's a list of frequently asked questions: |
FAQ: |
Q. Do I have to have color guard experience? A. No. While experience is a plus, we are very willing to teach you everything you need to know to march with the band. We get all levels of experience, so don't feel intimidated. Q. Does it take up a lot of time? A. While the band is very involved, it is very easy to schedule around. In the fall, practices are Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 3:45-5:45pm, and Saturday mornings depending on the football game schedule. Exceptions are made for mandatory classes. Silks also have a sectional rehearsal on Tuesdays with our instructor, Lee Carlson from 7-9pm. Q. How much does it cost? A. You get a ton of free stuff for being in the band. We do have section dues every marching season, but for the most part all you pay for is food/souveneirs on trips and such. Even then, the band supplies about half your meals on away trips. Q. I don't want to join in the fall, can I join in the spring? A. While we do occasionally accept members in the spring, its much preferrable to do a full school year in the section. The experience of marching season and band camp is something impossible to make up in the spring. Most of the routines we learn will carry over into the basketball season as well. Q. Do I have to go to band camp? A. Yes. We are an official section in the band, therefore we have to go to band camp like all the other instrumentalists. We do however, spend a great deal of time off the field with our instructor. Q. Why do I have to go early to band camp? A. The Silk and Percussion sections of the band hold two extra days of training and auditions the weekend before band camp. You do move in earlier than the rest of the band. We do feed you those two extra days. Q. Is it only girls? A. Absolutely not. Two years ago now, we had our first male silk, and we're hoping it will encourage other guys who have to desire to learn and twirl with us to consider joining the section. Q. Sounds great, how do I sign up? A. Contact us by email first, and let us know you're interested, and then either fill out and mail in the Band Camp Reply Card (available at all orientations), or go to uscband.com and fill out a future member profile. If you have already filled out a form and given it to us, you'll be hearing from us in the next couple of weeks to confirm your housing and attendence for band camp. Feel free to email either or both of your section leaders to ask or add any questions you might have in addition to whats here. - Samantha - Antonietta |
