The routes of US 183 and 283 through Texas today are quite
different than how they used to be; check out this scan of my 1947
atlas:
Compare that to a modern atlas. Back then US 183 and 283 were
co-signed south of Brady and through Mason, along what is now US 377.
That meets US 83 a mile or two north of Junction, so 183/283 could've
ended there... although I think it's more likely that the routes
would've been co-signed with US 83 south about another mile to the
junction with US 290. That's where Steven Taylor took some photos in
March 2004. This first one is looking south on US 377, just past the
I-10 interchange (exit 456):
This was once US 83 (today that route bypasses town via I-10).
Coming in from the right is Ranch Rd 1694, which is the old alignment
of US 290. Eastbound 290 continued straight ahead (with southbound US
83), and US 183/283 ended here. Below is a close-up of the
signage:
The black pickup is at the historic south end of US 183/283, and
the red pickup is eastbound on historic US 290. Below we're looking
the opposite direction:
This would've been northbound US 83 and westbound US 290, which
continued to the left. Ahead was the south beginning of US
183/283.
