When the seminal US routes were assigned in 1926, US 168 was among them, running
from Louisville to Mt. Vernon KY. Then in 1934, US 150 was extended eastward
through Louisville. From there it followed former US 168 all the way to Mount
Vernon. In other words, the US 168 designation would've been completely redundant,
so it was eliminated.
Where southbound US 25 (Richmond Street) intersects US 150, there are sign
assemblies across the road, on both the left and right sides. The one below
is on the left:

That's a change from what was there before:
Elkins, Aug. 2000
The first shot below shows the signage on the right:
Elkins (both)
That was unchanged as of my visit in 2007. Compare that with the second photo
above, which was the same assembly before the peeling KY 461 sign was replaced,
and before the "KY 150" sign goof was fixed (pre-August 2000). US 150 begins
to the right, and so did historic US 168.
The photo below is looking east on US 150; the designation ends here:
me, July 2007
Before US 150 came through here, that was the east end of US 168. Straight
ahead is southbound US 25; left is northbound US 25; and right is KY 1249. This
last photo is looking the opposite direction (west on northbound US 25):
me, July
2007
US 25 continues to the right on Richmond, while straight ahead is the east
beginning of US 150 (and the former beginning of US 168).
